Obituary

Jean Elizabeth Sultzer, born on March 11, 1939 in Indian Head, Maryland to the late Rosie Adele and Jerome Curtis. She was one of five children.  She was affectionately known to all as "Ma," "Jean" and "Miss Jean" to family and friends.

She spent her childhood years in Indian Head, Maryland graduating from Pomonkey High School in 1957.  After high school, she married William Anthony Sultzer and after a whirlwind visit to Tony's home in Selma, Alabama they returned to the area and settled in Southeast Washington, D.C.  After running out of space in the first apartment on Terrace Place with two children, William Sultzer, Jr., and Timothy Sultzer, they moved with their new edition, David Sultzer, to Horner Pl, S.E. into their first house.

Jean began and ended her career at the Department of Energy in downtown Washington, D.C.  She began as a secretary and finished as an analyst, but along the way she dipped her toes in many endeavors, but none of those could compare to her more than 40 years of joyful work as an Avon Representative serving the close community of Southeast D.C. and beyond.  She also tried her hand at real estate, barbering and on-call substitute teaching in the Prince George's County school system.

She was also a faithful parishioner of the Catholic church.  With membership at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and then later Assumption Church.  Always participating in church and family events, fundraisers, and any event that involved cooking, eating and travel.

Jean's love of life extended beyond many borders.  Always inspired to travel the United States and beyond; every year a vacation near or far and was a photo-bug on every journey; never met a stranger, and had a lifetime of conversation to share with everyone she met.

She remained active with her Pomonkey High School class for all her years after graduation, participating in reunion after reunion and a craft fair just last year.  She was a strong believer and active member in the Government Workers Union and stayed in close contact with many of her work friends and always a kind word, friendly smile, and welcoming wave for her friends and neighbors.

Jean loved nothing more than being a dedicated mother to her three sons and a loving wife to her husband Tony.  She made us strong and inspired us to believe that anything was possible.  May her light of inspiration and kindness shine forever in the hearts of everyone she touched.

Jean Sultzer will be missed by a loving family and a lifetime of friends.

Jean leaves many to cherish her memory.  Her husband of 56 years, William Sultzer, preceded her in passing.  She leaves three sons William, Jr. (wife, Catherine), Timothy, Sr. (wife, Cheryl) and David (wife, Sheila); four grandchildren, Chantel, Francesca, Timothy, Jr. and Terrell, and two great-grandchildren, Aliya and Trinity.  Three siblings preceded her in death while one sibling remains to cherish her memory.  She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her Assumption Church Family to hold dear her memory.
