Obituary

Reverend Yancey Warren was born on March 28, 1927 in Hilltop, Maryland to the late Deacon Yellie Y. Warren and Deaconess Laura Warren. He is 7 of 13 children. He departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 25, 2012.

Rev. Warren attended the public schools in Charles County, Maryland, the Phelps Vocational School and Dennis Vocational School, both in Washington, D.C. He served in the United States Army from September 1945 until November 1946, at which time he was honorably discharged. Rev. Warren was employed with the United States Government at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Maryland, retiring on December 31, 1981 after 35 years and 9 months of service as an Explosive Truck Driver, and supervisor. He continued his professional career as a bus driver with Charles County Public Schools and retired once again in 1997, after 15 years of service. He was known for his black and white uniform, which consisted of a black bow tie and black driving cap.

In January 1948, Rev. Warren united in holy matrimony to the late Ms. Lila Burrows of Washington D.C. From this union five children were born, one son, Yancey Jr. and four daughters; Lois Ann, Lorraine, Marguerite (Gregory) and Diane. In October 1959, Rev. Warren united in holy matrimony to Ms. Viola C. Wills of Faulkner, Maryland. From this union five children were born, four sons; Anthony (Becky), Matthew (Christine), Mark (Lititia) and Timothy (Allison) and one daughter, Lesia (Terry). Rev. Warren has 13 children in all to include Sandra Dyson (George), Samuel Swann (Denise) and Theresa Ross (Michael). On March 23, 2002, he was united in holy matrimony to Ms. Bertha Burroughs of Pisgah, Maryland.

Rev. Warren joined Zion Baptist Church in Hilltop, Maryland at the age of 12. During his time at Zion Baptist Church he worked as an Usher, sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, organized singing groups, and was ordained as a Deacon. Rev. Warren accepted his calling to the gospel ministry in 1961. In 1962 he joined St. Mary's Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., under the late Rev. Dr. Louis A. McCombs. He received his license to preach on June 23, 1963 and completed his ministerial training at the Washington Baptist Seminary in Washington, D.C. On October 18, 1969, Rev. Warren was ordained as a Baptist Minister.

Rev. Warren being led of the Holy Spirit organized the Woodland Village Baptist Mission of Indian Head, Maryland on October 15, 1972. He renovated his home in Woodland Village as the place of worship for the mission. On Saturday, June 9, 1973, the mission was reorganized as the Woodland Village Baptist Church. Also, in 1972 he accepted the call to Pastor the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, in Orange County, Virginia. Pastor Warren led both congregations for 9 years. In 1986 the Lord placed it on his heart to build a new edifice for the Woodland Village Baptist Church. Pastor Warren successfully transitioned the ministry from a 4-room house church to a modern 5000 sq. ft. facility with a seating capacity of 300. He often said this was a small church with a big heart. His motto was, " Father, not my will, but Thine be done". This is a testimony of what God can do and will do for his children if they step out on faith. He served faithfully as Pastor from 1972-2002.

Rev. Warren was very active in his local community and the Washington, D.C. area. He served as leader of the 4-H Club for 4 years; was a member of the Housing Coalition and Nuisance Board of Charles County; served as Chaplain of the Bee Hive Lodge #66 F. & AM.
