Obituary

William Russell Washington "Bill," 72 of Indian Head, Maryland.

Peacefully, Friday evening, August 28, 2020, William Russell Washington, "Bill," as he was affectionately called, changed his address from earth to eternity.

Bill was born in Pomonkey, Maryland on Sunday,  March 14, 1948 to Doris Virginia (Hackerson) Washington and James Henry Washington.  He received his early education through the Charles County Public School System, graduating from Pomonkey High School, Class of 1966.

Bill soared with determination to advance and pursue his education, earning a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a Master's Degree in Industrial Arts from George Washington University. After completing his education, he was employed with the Charles County Board of Education.  In 2001, he retired after 30 years of service from Piccowaxen Middle School, Newburg, Maryland. For his dedicated service, he received an Appreciation and Recognition Award for Continuous Loyal Service from The Board of Education Charles County.

Bill was very active in the community. He was a member of the "Omega PSI PHI Fraternity," member of the Deer Run Golf Club and numerous bowling clubs: The Ups and Downs; The Inez Golden and Keglers, The AFCE and The Ringers Bowling Clubs.

In addition to his passion for golfing and bowling; his hand dancing skills were phenomenal, he and Sheila taking the show with onlookers cheering and applauding for more.  He enjoyed socializing with his team members and friends.  Bill was also known for giving good advice, especially to family members. He was definitely a family man and enjoyed spending quality time with his wife; Sheila.  If you saw one, you would see the other.  Bill was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.  He was patient, compassionate, and loyal to the ones he loved.

Bill entered his heavenly home at the Restore Health Rehabilitation Center, in White Plains, Maryland with his loving and devoted wife, Sheila Matthews-Washington, by his side.  He was preceded in death by his parents; adoptive parents, uncle and aunt, William and Eva Hackerson; sisters, Brenda Washington and Patricia Gutrick; grandmother, Emma Stepney Clark; grandfather, John Henry Stepney; uncle, Charles Stepney "Buster;" aunt, Agnes Warren and lifetime friend and buddy, Joseph Eldridge Queen.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife, Sheila; step-son, Troy; grandchildren; brother, Thomas Washington (Earlene); sisters-in-law, Betsy Mack, Diane Johnson, Renee, Marsha "Kay," and Karen Matthews; brother-in-law, Alfred Gutrick; nieces and nephews, Tonya Washington, Darron Gutrick, Alfreda Buddington, Sterling Gutrick, Shaun Gutrick (Serina), Stacey Gutrick, Jamal Washington, LaVonya Henderson (Rev. Michael), Richard Washington (Ziggy) and a host of cousins and friends.

Viewing, 12 noon until time of Service, 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.
