IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William James
Boggs, Sr. "Billy"
July 24, 1925 – January 22, 2018
On Monday, January 22, 2018, William James Boggs Sr. departed this life at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD, to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Billy as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, was born on July 24, 1925 in Germantown, PA, to the late William James Boggs Sr. and the late Ethel Coombs Boggs Warren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his Sisters, Viola Mason, Margaret Johns and Martha Johnson.
At an early age, Billy attended the Philadelphia, PA school system and at the age of 15 he moved his age up so that he could attend The Civilian Conservation Corps (CC Camp.) At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in World War II in the South Pacific and was later Honorably discharged on January 18, 1946. While in the Navy, he was sending money home to his mother to purchase land for him in Spring Hill, MD and this is how he relocated from Philadelphia when he returned home. After returning home, he went to work at the Department of the Army, Radio Station Facility. Billy was employed at Andrew Air Force Base, as a Boiler Plant Operator retiring with 36 years of service. Billy was never one to stay idle, after retirement he decided to go back to work for the Charles County Public Works cutting grass. Billy was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and was an active member, attending church regularly until the time of his passing. For years he was reliable for the building maintenance of the church.
In his spare time, Billy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hanging out at Mattawoman, Fords and the American Legion. Billy loved fishing and taking trips to different casinos. He enjoyed gardening and making homemade wine from the fruits of his labor. Whenever his family would stop by you would always hear him speaking about his having watched his collection of old western movies or the Lemon Sponge Pie he had made. Billy could not talk on Sunday or anytime the Redskins were playing as he was an avid fan. Billy loved teasing his family, especially his children and had a nick name for each of them (William – Jr., Janice – Smoochie and Lisa – Sally) and most of his other family members. ….. and let's not forget how much he loved his "Swiggy Poo's".
Billy spent many years living in Spring Hill, MD, from the time he returned home from the military service, until 2014 when he decided to move to Southwinds Active Adult Community, located in White Plains, MD. For the last decade of Billy's life, his nephew Jimmy Johns was his devoted care taker and handy man. Though Billy was his uncle, Jimmy was like a son to him.
Billy was a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people (NAACP), WAC Hughes Lodge 1053, the American Legion Randolph Furey Post 170, Mattowoman Rod and Gun Club and the Loyal Sportsman.
Billy was a wonderful father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He leaves to cherish in his memory, Son; William J. Boggs Jr. Daughter's; Janice M.
