Obituary

Herd, Wesie Leola Johnson (Age 82) of Waldorf, Maryland.

On Monday, September 12, 2011, Wesie Leola Johnson Herd, "affectionately known as Grandnanny," peacefully departed this life for one eternal. Wesie was the daughter of the late Phillip (Roy) and the late Sarah Savoy Johnson of LaPlata, MD.

Born on November 2, 1928 in LaPlata, Maryland, Wesie was educated in the Charles County public school system. Her first job was at the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head, MD before she became a full time stay at home mother. After raising her own 13 children, she became a second mother to her grandkids.

In her early years, Wesie loved to dance and play cards. As she grew older, her interests turned to reading romance novels, rooting for her favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys, and watching the World Series baseball games. She especially enjoyed cooking for her family. She shared her delicious recipes with her children and initiated the start of our family's annual holiday events. These events gathered family members from miles around for fellowship, food and fun.

As her health declined, she entered Genesis Health Care, where she became an avid bingo player and spent time creating craft projects to give to her beloved grandchildren as gifts.

In addition to her parents, Wesie was preceded in death by Charles Hawkins, oldest daughter, Salome B. Hawkins, son Albert (Ricky) Heard, sisters, Dorothy and Sarah, and her brothers William, Ralph and Henry.

Left to cherish her memory are her eleven children: Patricia, Raymond (Jackie), Gary (Linda), Elroy (Latrice), Connie (Marty), Calvin (Cynthia), Carolyn (Charles), Sylvia "Anita," Dorothy "Suzanne," Wayne (Beatrice), Tracy, and Alvin "Ball" Heard, who she regarded as a son, 35 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves her five siblings: Leroy (Rosetta), John "Buster" (Irene),Thomas (Pauline), Martha "Honey" (Joseph) and Ernest "Jerome" and special friends, Donna Ellis, Naomi Dawkins and Albert "Bigman" Heard, who served as both a father and stepfather to her children.

Her viewing will be held on Saturday, September 17th, 9:00am unitl Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary's Avenue, LaPlata, Maryland 20646.
