IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Virginia Matilda
Josephine Simms
October 17, 1921 – August 5, 2025
Mrs. Virginia Matilda Josephine Simms, 103, of Burkittsville, Maryland, passed from this life to eternal life on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the home of her granddaughter and her husband, Kimberly and Thomas Marshall. Born on October 17, 1921, in Burkittsville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Mary Graham Henderson and Daniel Benjamin Henderson. She was the wife of the late Charles P. Simms and the mother of Larry Benjamin Henderson.
She was raised at the home place in Burkittsville, and received her formal education from Lincoln High School, earning her high school diploma. In her career, she worked at and retired from the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., after 33 years of service. As an entrepreneur, she owned and managed an apartment complex. Yet among all her achievements, her greatest was being a mother and grandmother.
As a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, Mrs. Simms was deeply connected to her large family. She was the sibling of sisters Catherine Payne, Thelma Henderson, Dorothy Lucas, Mosi Line, and Acona Henderson, and brothers Roy Henderson, Richard Henderson, Theodore Henderson, and Maynard Henderson. She was also the sister-in-law of Mable Henderson, Morgan Payne, Danny Lucas, and Joe Henderson.
Mrs. Simms had a generous heart and a love for life. With a charitable spirit, she was a supporter and benefactor to many, generously offering herself and her resources to those in need. She was a woman of strong faith with a personal relationship with God.
Her favorite pastimes included gardening, playing the lottery, cooking, baking, caring for her family, and spending time with loved ones. Her love for nature, health, and well-being often found her exploring the woods in search of mushrooms and other plants for medicinal use.
Mrs. Simms, affectionately known as "Mum-Mum," became a beloved grandmother figure to many, especially in her online community. Her days started with a special "Good Morning, Mum-Mum" video, a tradition started by her granddaughter Kim. This touching tradition grew to include her social media family, bringing smiles and a sense of connection to begin each day.
Along with the joy and love, Mrs. Simms' life has also been touched by loss. In addition to her husband, parents, and grandparents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Evelyn Elaine Henderson; granddaughter, Pamela Elaine Kinney; great-grandson, Wendell Kinney, and other family members.
Because of a life well lived, her legacy lives on through those she leaves behind: one son, Larry Benjamin Henderson; grandchildren, Kevin Blaine Henderson and Kimberly Ann Marshall (Thomas); great-grandchildren, Kendra Henderson (Rob), Tyrelle Henderson (Tiffany), Oliver Kinney, Micaiah Kinney, Tyaunna Marshall, Taylor Marshall, and Michelle Sturgis (Andre); great-great-grandchildren, LeVar Smallwood, Samara Campbell, Karter Culley, Khodi-Ann Henderson, Kaleb, Deandre, Donavan, and DeSean Sturgis, Kyree and Korey Culley, Olivia Kinney , Jazzlynn and Raylynn Kinney, Mi'Cayla Kinney; along with countless nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Beyond her family, Mrs. Virginia Matilda Josephine Simms will also be greatly missed by her social media family and countless others throughout the community.
