Obituary

Vernell L. Carter-Crawford

Vernell was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and raised in Newark, New Jersey she spent her formative years living in New York (Bronx, Mt. Vernon, and Wappingers Falls) and later moved to Accokeek, MD. Vernell received her Associates Degree in Business Management and Accounting at Monroe College in Bronx, NY. She became a faithful and dedicated member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church in Bronx, NY in the late eighties under Pastor Joe Albert Sr. and became a Deaconess as well.

Vernell was employed with Cornell University Medical College in New York City for 17 years as Administrative secretary of Duplicating. Later she worked at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland as an Intensive Care Unit Secretary.

Vernell's heart was always set on having a daycare, a safe haven for children. In 2008 she opened Snuggles Childcare Learning Corner in her home; she loved her children very much. Later she continued to work at Southern Maryland during the week-ends even though she was quite ill. She also assisted her husband in their Catering Business, Brown Sugar Catering.

Vernell had some struggles, what she couldn't change she survived. What she couldn't alter, she lived through; (2Cor.4:17). Her cooking was magnificent. She maintained a home and children with very little means throughout her younger years. She believed in getting as much out of an education as possible. She worked tirelessly to ensure that all three of her children received a higher education.

Vernell was a talker and a thinker. Everyone she came in contact with left with knowledge, wisdom and understanding.

Peacefully on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at her home and surrounded by her loving family, Vernell transitioned from this earthly life to life eternal.

Vernell leaves her husband, Sedgwick; one son, Robert Carter Jr. (Donna); two daughters, Lisa Carter and Alaisa Cardenez (Edmund); five grandchildren whom she held so much compassion and heartfelt love, Robyn(F), Taylor (F), Ryan(M), Morgan(F), and Raydan(F); two nephews whom she spent a lot of time with and guided throughout their lives, Kenneth and Anthony Lewis; two brothers, Bernard and the late Alvin James(3-7-10); four sisters, Brenda(Timothy), Denise, Jacqueline and Bernetta and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Southern Maryland.
