THOMAS ELROY SMOOT, SR. (AGE 68) OF INDIAN HEAD, MD.
Thomas Elroy Smoot Sr., age 68, affectionately known to most as "Tommy" or "Henry," entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 7, 2017. Born on February 16, 1948, in La Plata, MD he was the son of the late Joseph and Hazel E. Smoot.
Tommy attended Bel Alton High School. He was employed by the College of Southern Maryland for over 30 years until his retirement in April 2010. He was a dedicated and devoted worker, CSM could always count on "Smoot" being there at first sight of a snowflake. To the people at the college he offered guidance, his opinion (whether you wanted it or not), and a smile. In addition to being employed with the college, he was also worked part time at Sears for 25 years where he started Smoot's Delivery Service.
Tommy loved to dance and party. He was the life of the party, once telling people he danced so much one night he went to bed and his feet were still dancing. His final hours were spent dancing and mingling at Green Acres. Besides dancing, Tommy loved to keep his cars clean. He would spend hours outside washing and waxing his cars, and remind you not to forget the tires. If he wasn't washing cars, he was outside tending to his yard. He took great pride in his yard. Tommy was a very outspoken man, who never hesitated to tell you what was on his mind. He did things his way or no way at all, most of the time without following instructions.
He told everyone he met how much he loved his family. He would drop everything to give one of his grandchildren a ride. He would be there early beeping the horn and using a few choice words, but he loved doing it. He was proud of all of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He encouraged all of his grandchildren to give him some great grandchildren. The sight of a baby would put a smile across his face. You could count on him to call all the new little ones "Dusty." One of the last things he told his granddaughter was, "I've lived my life, I am good as long as I see you have that baby I will be alright." He went to see his great granddaughter on Friday and peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Saturday morning.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Francine Smoot, sisters, Maryanna and Margaret Smoot, brothers, Joseph and Robert "Duke" Smoot, special friend, Jacqueline Johnson and brothers-in-law, Leroy Chase, Maurice Rolland and Larry Woodland Sr.
He was a father figure to many. Left to cherish many fond memories are his children Elroy, Shelley, Chrystal and Damian Smoot, and Nate' Thomas (Mark). Thirteen grandchildren: Darius, Eric (Ebony), Terrez (Ashley), Tevin, Jameya, Keisha, Tyron, JaQuan, Deiontre, Aniyah, Kiara, Jasmyn, and Diago. Five great grandchildren Elijah, Eryn, Terrez, Jr., Jiaire and Kailani. Siblings: John Smoot (Shirley), Harriet Rolland, Jerline Smoot, Sarah Whitaker (Kleston), Shirley Chase, and Carolyn Woodland.
