Butler, Sr.
December 7, 1939 – January 19, 2023
Thomas Llois Butler, Sr., 83 of Marbury, Maryland.
Thomas Llois Butler, Sr., more affectionately called "Llois," "Mr. Butler," "Coach Butler" or "Tom" by family and friends, was born, Thursday, December 7, 1939 to Eloise Brown. Llois grew up in Marbury, Maryland where he was raised by his grandparents, Robert and Marie Butler. He was educated in the Charles County Public School System and graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1958. Upon graduation Llois began his 34-year, 6 month career for the United States Defense Department as an Explosive Engineer Technician at the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland. Shortly thereafter, Llois married the love of his life, Patricia Valeria (Wilkerson) Butler on November 5, 1960. From that 62-year union they were blessed with four children.
Llois and Patricia lived in Marbury, Maryland for over 60 years. There, they served and had an enormous impact on the communities around the Western side of Charles County. At an early age Llois accepted Christ and was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marbury. The same church that his great grandmother, Adie E. Thomas, started in 1907. He served as a Trustee at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful member of the Food Bank Ministry and staunch supporter of the youth. Throughout his life, Llois made it a priority to give back to the community he truly loved, especially the youth. His passion and dedication to the youth led him to start the Indian Head Youth Football Program with the support of local businesses and organizations, such as Thornton Funeral Home and Bee-Hive Lodge No. 66. He wanted to make sure the kids were off the street and had something positive to do. He would even take money from his own pocket to buy equipment for the program and to pay for the kids to play football and cheerlead.
Llois was an active Mason member with the Bee-Hive Lodge No. 66 for 50 years. He was a dedicated member and served several leadership positions such as Past Master, Treasurer, Secretary and other roles as well. This also provided Llois another opportunity to be active and serve the community. He led fundraising and community events for Bee-Hive Lodge No. 66 such as free dinners for the seniors, trips to casinos, fashion shows, cabarets and concerts and the famous shad bake. People would drive from all over, in order to get the sauce Llois made for the shad bake.
Llois also served at the Marbury Fire Department for over 18 years.
On January 19, 2023, Thomas Llois Butler Sr. transitioned from labor to reward and entered into eternal rest at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, Maryland.
