IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sue Belle
Goode
February 14, 1935 – November 20, 2021
SUE BELLE GOODE, AGE 86, OF CLINTON, MARYLAND
Sue L. Goode was born on February 14, 1935, the youngest of five children born to the late Joseph and Martha Williams Lewis in Seneca, South Carolina. Sue attended the segregated Oconee County Training School in Seneca and later, as a teenager, moved to Washington, DC with her brother James and his family.
Sue secured a position with the U. S. State Department, where she served for over 30 years. After retirement, Sue was not one to sit down, and so returned as a contractor to the State Department for another 10 years. Sue was an excellent worker and received several meritorious awards for her hard work and dedication, culminating in her receipt of the highest civilian award given by the State Department for service achievement.
While in her twenties, Sue met and married Dr. Philip Goode, Jr., who during their marriage earned his Ph.D. The couple had two surviving children, Sheila and Philip, III and settled down in Clinton, MD, where they were active and involved neighbors for many years.
Sue's life was rooted in faith and centered around her love for God. Sue knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and believed the Bible to be the true Word of life. She was a decades long member of Fort Washington's Grace United Methodist Church, where she served in the Usher Ministry for many years.
Sue was a humble person; "the best person I ever knew", is how many described her. She was patient, kind, giving and no one ever heard her raise her voice in anger. Although Sue was quiet, she enjoyed a good joke and appreciated humor and the good times experienced with family and good friends. She loved to entertain and was an excellent housekeeper and cook. Sue was known for her fried chicken and potato salad and whenever there were family gatherings, everyone wanted her to prepare her two signature dishes.
Sue also enjoyed thrift store shopping and spent many Saturdays thrifting with her beloved niece, Lucia. She was an avid fan of Washington's football team. Sue will be missed by all who knew her.
Sue is survived by her two children, Sheila Goode and Philip William Goode, III (Candace), two granddaughters, Ivy and Joi, and a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends.
