Sterling Roscoe Swann, Sr., 82, of Indian Head, Maryland.

Obituary

Sterling Roscoe Swann, Sr., the youngest son born to Ollie and Bernice Swann on February 16, 1940, transitioned to his eternal home on January 11, 2023, at the Charles Regional Medical Center, LaPlata, Maryland.

Sterling attended Marbury Elementary School in Marbury, Maryland.  He graduated from Pomonkey High School on June 6, 1958.

Sterling was raised in a Christian Home and was baptized at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at the early age of 11. He attended Sunday School and sang in the Senior Choir and Male Chorus. Later, He served as a Trustee of the church, and became the Church Treasurer and served faithfully for over twenty years until his health began to fail. One of his favorite passages of scripture was Psalm 27.

Sterling loved his family and enjoyed going on outings with them. He loved fishing, boating, and camping.  He loved to water ski and was pretty good at it.

Sterling's first job was with Haymaker and Brown Construction Company where he was employed as a Bricklayer's Helper. Later, he was employed at the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head, MD where he served for many years.  He later was employed at the Cameron Station Department of the United States Army. There he served as a chauffeur for the U.S. Army Band and transported them to many concerts.  He later transferred to the Pentagon where he was employed in the Motor Pool Division and served as a chauffeur and shuttle bus driver. During his tenure with the U.S. Army Department, Sterling received many awards and citations.  Some of his awards were: Service of Excellence, Outstanding Service, Safety Performance, and Employee of the Month.  He received trophies for accident-free driving miles for 8,000, 15,000, 30,000, 45,000, 60,000, 75,000, 100,000, and 125,000 miles.  While Sterling was employed at the Pentagon, he was instrumental in securing the purchase of a New Bus for the church. He retired from the Pentagon in May 1994 with over 30 years of Federal service. Later, Sterling was employed at Beretta and retired again after 10 years of service. While employed at Beretta he received an Award for Perfect Attendance.

Sterling had a passion for working on boats.  He earned a reputation for being known as "The Boat Man." He spent many years making sure his customers' boats were operating at top efficiency. During this time, he enrolled at the Outboard Motor Corporation (OMC) training Center where he received several Certificates and Diplomas. He continued to work on boats until his health began to fail.

Sterling married his High School sweetheart, Carolyn Francine Jackson on March 4, 1961, at the Mt. Hope Baptist Church.  They were married for 61 years.  Sterling and Carolyn were blessed with two children from this union: Sterling Roscoe Swann, Jr., and Melissa Francine Swann-Adams (deceased).

Sterling was proceeded in death by his parents; Ollie and Bernice Swann, and his siblings; Mary Sanders, Melvin Swann, Helen Brockington, and Floyd Swann.

Sterling leaves behind his loving wife; Carolyn F. Swann, a loving Son; Rev. Dr. Sterling Swann, Jr., and Five Grandchildren; Sean Swann, Marc Swann, Jena Swann-Mendez (Aaron), Caleb Swann, and Alisha Swann. Ten Great Grandchildren; Domonick Dyson, Caleb, Jr., Josiah, Devine, Nevaeh, Janiyah Swann, Melissa, Summer, and Alexander Mendez. Two Brothers-in-law; Raymond Jackson (Shirley), and Barry Jackson. Two Sisters-in-law; Gloria Sweetney, and Evelyn Webb (Al). A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sterling will truly be missed for his beautiful, infectious smile, quiet and humble spirit, and jokes. We will always cherish our precious memories of him.

Viewing, 9:00 a.m., until time of Service, 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 5560 Pleasant Grove Road, Marbury, Maryland 20658. Interment, Church Cemetery.
