Shirley Elizabeth (Thornton) Fletcher-Sumner, 75 of Berwyn Heights, Maryland.

Obituary

Shirley Elizabeth Fletcher-Sumner was born, March 12, 1945 in Leesburg, Virginia to the late William Edward and Evelyn Katrina Thornton.  She departed this life on February 18, 2021 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

Shirley was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System.  Upon completing school, she volunteered at the local schools and was the neighborhood mom to many children.  In September 1984 she began her career at The Catholic University of America as Director of Custodial Services until her retirement March 1999.  Ambitiously following her dreams, she was the co-owner of "Pots and Pans," a carry-out that resided in Capitol Heights, Maryland.  Shirley's kindred spirit continued from 2001 to 2010 where she worked at Melwood Horticultural Training Center and NW Works until she truly became a retiree (2010).

Shirley was joined in matrimony to Hubert L. Sumner on October 18, 2017 in her home, officiated by Pastor Dr. Diane Newman-Frye, surrounded by a few loving family members.

The family wishes to acknowledge Shirley's cherished family members whom preceded her in death: Evelyn Thornton (mother), Charles Thornton (brother), Raymond Johnson (brother), Gladys Hogan (sister), Sharon Fletcher (daughter), Walter Fletcher Sr., (ex-spouse), Jeremy and Jermaine Fletcher (grandsons), Margaret Mason (best friend), Marsha Sumner (sister-in-law), and Albert Charles Eggleston Sr., (brother-in-law).

Shirley's family was most important to her.  She really enjoyed all the family gatherings during special occasions and holidays.  Her enthusiasm and passion for cooking cannot be denied.  Everyone loved going over to her house to indulge in that famous macaroni and cheese, homemade rolls, and decadent peach cobbler.  You see, she loved to be surrounded by family and friends and insisted that there was plenty of food for everyone. She was a very kind hearted and generous woman in every sense of the word, often going out of her way to help any and every one.

God has truly blessed Shirley and she leaves to cherish her memories:  her husband, Hubert Sumner, her children, Walter (Bud), Darlene (Little Bits), Charles (Nanny), and Pamela (Pam).  Her sisters, Joyce Eggleston and Louise Hawkins and brother, Matthew Conway, Jr.  Her grandchildren, Chevon, Kelly, Shaniqua, Terrance, Walter, Tevin, Jazzmin, Jada, and several great-grandchildren.  Additionally, she leaves two devoted nieces Carolyn Conway-Branch (Bubbles) and Solange Morton, sister-in-law (Beverly), and good girlfriend (Michele Dulac) as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Shirley will be deeply missed, but now she is an Angel walking around in heaven.
