Obituary

Shirley Edith "Nana" Cooper was born in Nanjemoy, Maryland on May 19, 1943 to the late Raymond Riley, Sr., and the late Mary Louise Queen Riley. On Friday, October 14, 2022, she transitioned to eternal rest at her lifelong home in Welcome, Maryland surrounded by her immediate and extended family.

Shirley graduated from Bel Alton High School. Always a lover of children, she completed two years of undergraduate study in Early Childhood Education at Bowie State University.

Shirley worked for years in Indian Head, Maryland at the Naval Ordnance Station. She retired as an Engineering Technician in 1993. After retirement, Shirley worked at Mitchell Supply, Hooks & Hangers and Rite Aid.

Shirley was an active member of Zion Baptist Church for many years. She loved sewing, making quilts, curtains, aprons, and shoe pockets. She also enjoyed tailoring clothes. Shirley loved playing cards with her sisters, shopping, especially "thrifting", baking pumpkin pies every fall, canning seasonal fruits, working in her garden and car rides anywhere as long as it was with her sisters. Shirley was consistent and loyal to her beloved late husband, her children and grandchildren. She was a respected friend, neighbor, and auntie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, George Cooper, whom she missed dearly; her daughter, Victoria Monique Cooper-Hill; her son, George Terrance Cooper; brothers, Wayne, Ronald, Marvin, Jason, Joseph and Raymond Riley Jr.; and sisters, Ella Hart, Viola Cox and Mary Proctor.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Sharon Cooper; her son, Ellsworth Gray; two sisters, Gloria Gray and Iris Riley; one brother, Wendell Riley; three grandchildren, Shyrice Mitchell, Victoria Bell and Antony Tibbs; sisters -in-law, Catherine, Delores, Jacklin and Theresa (John); brother-in-law, William (Denise), and Charles (Adriana) and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Viewing, 9:00 a.m., until Life Celebration, 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Zion Baptist Church, 8105 Annapolis Woods Road, Welcome, Maryland 20693. Interment, Church Cemetery.
