Sarah Mae Vaughn (Age 76) of Fort Washington, Maryland.
Sarah Mae Vaughn, daughter of the late Leroy and Ruby Vaughn was born on October 24, 1940 in Lancaster, South Carolina. She was called home to rest with our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 15, 2017.
Shug, as she was affectionately called, received her early education in the Heath Springs and Lancaster County Public School Systems. Her spiritual foundation was established at New Hope Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour at an early age. Sarah soon moved to the Washington, D.C. area with her family where she completed her education and proudly graduated from McKinley Technology High School. Sarah was employed at Woodward & Lothrop as Supervisor and Head Baker for 25 years. After her time at Woodies, she started her employment with Safeway where she held the same position for 20 years until she retired.
Sarah embraced life. She enjoyed reading novels, spending time with family and going on cruses with friends. She particularly enjoyed fishing, swimming, long road-trips and bowling for which she received many trophies. She was a die-hard Redskins fan! Watching football, while enjoying good food was one of her favorite past times. She loved cooking southern foods that reminded her of home. Most people have a guilty pleasure but for Shug, it was bar-b-que flavored pork skins! Sarah had many interests but baking was her true passion. She made delicious cakes and desserts. Beautifully decorated hand crafted wedding cakes were her specialty. Shug took extreme pride in her family! She would always kiss everyone on the cheeks that came to visit. She always made spending time with family a priority by babysitting whenever needed, planning family picnics and spending the weekends with her sister Ollie Mae. She was not just an aunt; she was a second mother to her five nieces. She had an unbreakable bond with her entire family.
In 1998, Sara became a member of About My Father's Business Outreach Ministries (AMFB). Under the leadership of Pastor Stephen Joyce and First Lady Rosie Joyce, Sarah rededicated her life to Christ. Sarah was a dedicated member of the church. She served as an Usher and volunteered to prepare home-cooked meals for area homeless shelters. She was truly loved and appreciated by her church family.
Sarah leaves a legacy of discipleship, courage, excellence, generosity, and strength and most importantly, love. She will be greatly missed for her sense of humor, that jolly chuckle when she laughed and the unconditional love she had for family.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; Leroy and Ruby Vaughn, sister; Ollie Mae Smith, God sister; Coby Sneed and her great-great nephew Marcus Marrow.
Sarah leaves to cherish her memory, one brother; William Vaughn of Rock Hill, SC, a beloved aunt; Janie Mae Powell of Texas, five nieces; Ruby (Leonard) Poe of Fort Washington, MD, Alvine (Gregory) Ledbetter of Upper Marlboro, MD, Renia (Steve) Williams of Brandywine, MD, Lesa (Ronald) Lee of Suitland, MD, Tonoa Jackson of Upper Marlboro, MD.
