Sara Ann (Proctor) Morris, Age 87 of District Heights, Maryland.
"Ms. Redskins"
Sara was born in Washington, DC to Nicholas & Lena Proctor; She had eleven siblings (all but two preceded her in death): Lawrence, Camilla, Louis, Paul, Sylvester, Milton, Mary Ella, Florence, (Sara), Francis Augustus, Oscar, & Katheryn. Sara's parents lived in Southwest DC at the time of her birth. She attended George Bell Elementary School; Brown Junior High School; Cardoza Senior High School, and DC Teacher's College (currently University of the District of Columbia).
Sara met first Howard Wilton Morris, Sr. (preceded her in death 1976) in 1949, from that union came one son Howard Wilton Morris, Jr. (preceded her in death 1990) and one daughter Katrina Cecelia (Morris) Chandler. Sara was very proud of her children's accomplishments and always, always expressed that sentiment to them. Her children knew without a doubt their parent's acceptance & love.
She was employed at the Government Printing Office during the 1950s, Census Bureau & J.C. Penny's in the 1960s; National Geographic Society in the 1970s; and later became a stay at home wife & mom until the death of her husband. She then re-entered the workforce working for the federal government at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation where she retired in July of 1994.
In her early years, Sara was a member in the Jolly Belles Social Club and then the Twilighters Social Club where she shared wonderful friendships with the ladies. Sara enjoyed bowling and she bowled on several leagues, her team names were: The Fun Bunch, Drs. In The House and the Tuesday Twisters. She would even travel out of town to participate in tournaments. She had a Redskin Bowling ball and even decorated her bowling shoes with all kinds of Redskin stickers. She also enjoyed poetry, playing & watching tennis, going to the casinos, watching all sports especially the REDSKINS, doing soduko and word search puzzles on the back porch while drinking her coffee in the mornings.
Her biggest accomplishment outside of rising her children was when she quit smoking cold turkey after 50 years, in 1999. Sara was raised Catholic and would teach Sunday School. However, she accepted Christ in 1991 after being witnessed to by her daughter. She would attend church with her daughter from time to time as she would say "church was good, I enjoyed the service but sometimes y'all sing too long saying the same lines over and over".
She was a wonderful and totally supportive mother who loved her children unconditionally. As a matter of fact, she loved people unconditionally, she didn't know any strangers. She was always positive, willing to give encouraging words, always willing to listen to other's problems without being judgmental. She would show you the lighter side of a situation. She had the ability to let things just roll off her back and keep it moving. Never held grudges! She would share her home with people when they were in a tight situation. She had a desire to have a daycare because she loved children and they loved her. She was the aunt who would round up the nieces & nephews pile them in the stationwagon and head to the park, the zoo, the beach, the museums, anywhere she thought they would enjoy themselves.
She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and considered it a pleasure to teach them the basics before they were ready to start school. There were papers taped to the bedroom doors, refrigerator, even the walls with words, colors, numbers, arithmetic problems, family names, a map of the United States, telephone numbers & clocks. She had a way of making learning fun for them.
Peacefully on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at her home, Sara Ann (Proctor) Morris, Ms. Redskin transitioned to eternal life.
