Matthews, Sandra Maria "Cookie" (Age 57) of Fort Washington, Maryland.
On Sunday, February 17, 2013 God called Sandra Maria Matthews, affectionately known as (Cookie) to His heavenly home.
Sandra was born November 16, 1955 to the late Lillian and Albert Matthews in Pisgah, Maryland. She was educated in Charles County, first at St. Mary Star of the Sea and then at Henry E. Lackey High School. After high school she attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County where she majored in Geography which led to her job as a Cartographer at the National Geographic Intelligence Agency. It was at this agency where she met and fell in love with her fiancé, Ken Sears. While at UMBC, Sandra became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and later became a charter member of the Nu Zeta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Waldorf, Maryland.
Sandra was a member of a huge family and she loved hosting family functions. She loved giving dinner parties, organizing family reunions, and enjoyed giving her annual Christmas morning breakfast. She loved to cook and was well known for her queen style potato salad. Sandra was a loving, gentle, warm and giving person. She devoted a great deal of her time and energy to the young people in the family especially goddaughter, Theresa Goosby and godsons, Louis Chesley, Jr. (Junie), Myron Gibson, Jaren Hagler and others.
In addition to her parents, Sandra is preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Hankins, Thelma Matthews, Laurette Smith and brother, Harold Matthews; Her nephews, Ronald Smith and Mark Hankins.
Sandra leaves to mourn a sister, Florine Matthews and brothers, William(Sonny)Matthews and Louis Hankins; many nieces, nephews, cousins, fiancé, Ken Sears, great-nieces & nephews and other relatives and friends.
Viewing, 6pm to 8pm Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in the Chapel of THORNTON Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland and on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 9am until Mass of Christian Burial, 10am at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 30 Mattingly Avenue, Indian Head, Maryland. Interment, St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont, Maryland.
