Obituary – Rudolph Clinton Datcher (Hick)

Trustee Emeritus Rudolph Clinton Datcher departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 24, 2012. Hick, as he was affectionately known, was born on September 24, 1927 in Nanjemoy, Maryland to the late Sydney and Mary Datcher.

He attended public schools in Charles County, Maryland. He furthered his education at Bowie State University. Hick was employed at the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head, Maryland and retired in January 1983 after 32+ years of dedicated service.

Hick accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. He was baptized and became a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C. R. Alexander. Hick was very active and served faithfully until his health began to fail. He was a devoted member of the Board of Trustees, serving as the Chairman for several decades. He loved his church and was dependable in carrying out his responsibilities as a Trustee. If there was something in and around the church that needed to be repaired, you could find him there, day or night. Hick enjoyed singing with the Senior Choir and was often called upon to sing a solo at special events. His church family at Mount Hope recognized and honored him with numerous presentations and plaques over the years in recognition of his outstanding work as a servant of God.

On October 21, 1950, Hick was joined in holy matrimony to the late Florence Datcher. He was very devoted to his wife and cared for her until her death. They were married for 56 years.

Hick enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing and farming. In his pastime, he would feed goats and cows on Bill Bowie's farm. He was fondly known as "The Nanjemoy Pro Bono Attorney, Doctor and Tax Man". He often volunteered throughout the community, namely the Nanjemoy Community Center. Hick was an active participant at the center and enjoyed spending time with other seniors in the community. We will all remember him as having a great sense of humor and a laugh that was unforgettable.

In addition to his parents, Hick was preceded in death by his wife Florence; five brothers, Frank, Sydney, Milton, William and Chester; and a sister, Florence.

He leaves to cherish his sweet memory, three sons, Larry (Brenda), Jerry "JJ", and Michael (Gena–fiancee'); a grandson, Nevoy Dyson; six brothers, Phillip (Bertha), Charles (Adalaide), Winston (Arnetta), Reginald (Isadore), Gerald (Mildred) , and James (Mickey) Thomas (Ruby); two sisters, Geraldine Swann and Marie Young (Rodney); a brother-in-law, Kelly Burgess and a host of other relatives and friends.

His viewing will be from 9am until time of Service, 11am on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 8705 Gilroy Road, Nanjemoy Maryland. Interment, Church Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland.
