Obituary

Penny, Royce Lionel (Age 54) of Indian Head, Maryland.

Royce Lionel Penny was born at 12:23 p.m. on July 17, 1959 at Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C. He entered into eternal rest on February 5, 2014 at 6:58 a.m. at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.


Royce grew up in Indian Head, Maryland. He attended Charles County Public Schools, graduating from Lackey High School in 1977. After graduating, Royce enlisted in the United States Navy touring the Persian Gulf War. He served his country for 12 years. During his tenure he received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Grenada), Navy Expeditionary Medal (Lebanon), Navy Unit Commendation and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. After serving his country, he went to work for the federal government as a civilian at the Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon his death, he was employed as a Night Desk Clerk at the Super 8 Motel in Indian Head, Maryland.


He was a faithful member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Indian Head, Maryland.


Royce enjoyed fishing, sports, cycling and playing poker with family and friends.


He was preceded in death by his beautiful daughter, Andrea' Phylana Lancelin Penny (monk-monk); his oldest brother, Joseph Penny Jr., and his youngest brother, Phillip Leon Penny.


Left to cherish his memories are his parents, Renetta and Joseph Oliver Penny, Sr.; a son, Lamar Dunnington; three grandchildren; three sisters, Theresa Penny, Janice Harris and Jackie Marcus; a brother-in-law, Arthur (Chucky) Harris; a life-long friend, Sandra Lanceslin, four aunts, three uncles, four nieces, three nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Viewing, 9am until Mass of Christian Burial, 11am, Thursday, February 13, 2014 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 30 Mattingly Avenue, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.

Interment, 2:00pm Thursday, February 27, 2014 Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland.
