Rodney Bernard Hunter, Sr.

Rodney Bernard Hunter, affectionately known as “Rod,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the age of 58 in Pomfret, Maryland.

Rodney was born on March 1, 1968, in Tampa, Florida, to Cal and Marian Hunter. He attended Therrell High School in Atlanta, Georgia, before answering the call of duty to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. During his distinguished 21-year military career, from 1987 until his retirement in 2008, Rodney attained the esteemed rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8). He concluded his naval service at PAX River, Maryland. His dedication to the Navy reflected his strong sense of duty, discipline, leadership, and love of country.

Following his honorable military service, Rodney continued his career in logistics and supply. He shared his knowledge, skills, and experience through many years of service at Fort Belvoir, Lockheed Martin, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

On February 15, 2013, Rodney married the love of his life, Zina F. Walton. Together, they shared more than 13 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful life filled with love, faith, family, laughter, and treasured memories. Rodney was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He cherished spending time with the people he loved and believed in enjoying life to the fullest. He especially loved serving as the DJ for the basement parties he and Zina hosted at their beloved “R & Z Lounge.” Rodney also enjoyed dressing sharply, always smelling good, working on computers, riding motorcycles, and relaxing while watching Netflix.

Rodney will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, kindness, strength, faith, generosity, and deep love for his family and dear friends. Through his service, encouragement, friendship, mentorship, and giving spirit, he touched the lives of many. His presence brought joy, laughter, and warmth to those fortunate enough to know him.

Rodney was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Marian Hunter, and his brother, Cal Hunter Jr., affectionately known as “PeeWee.” He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Zina F. Hunter; his children, Lexus Powell and Rodney Hunter Jr., Stepchildren; Joshua Snow, Lawanda Carver, Latorcia Snow, and Darrius Duffy; a host of beloved grandchildren; his father, Cal Hunter; his sister, Katrina Roberts; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, fellow veterans, and dear friends.

The family kindly welcomes green plants, cards, or memorial donations.

Although Rodney will be deeply missed, his love, laughter, legacy, and devoted service to his family and country will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Friends may visit with the family Sunday, August 9, 2026 for a memorial service at 1:00 pm in The Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment will be scheduled at a later date.
