Robert Jackson Smith, Jr., 76 of Nanjemoy, Maryland.
Robert Jackson Smith, Jr., slipped peacefully from our earthly presence on Monday, January 23, 2017, at Genesis Healthcare,
La Plata, Maryland. He was born in Washington, D.C., on June 6, 1940 to the late Robert Jackson Smith, Sr., and Bernetta V. Smith.
Duke as he was affectionately known, was one of the first Blacks to attend the Alexander Graham Bell Vocational High School, located in Washington, D.C. He began his career in 1961 as a Forklift Operator at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, Maryland. Duke retired after 36 years of Federal Government Service. He met and married the love of his life, Mildred on September 23, 1989. They were married for 27 years. Together they enjoyed antiques, cars and traveling. They also loved to go dancing on Friday nights.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Smith; a sister-in-law, Lena Smith; two brothers-in-law, James Waters and Rudy Prillman; and a nephew, Edward Smith, Jr. Duke leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Mildred; five sons, Robert Smith, III (Jeneen), Bryan Smith (Bernice), Marc Smith (Lenka), Timmy Smith (Erin), and Andre Fenwick (Melissa); three daughters, Angie Smith, Pavielle Smith and Stacy Watson (Keith); 25 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two sisters; Yevonne Prilliman and Marie Waters; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Chisley, Joan Beverly, Mary Cobey, Theresa Smoot and Patricia Savoy; two brothers-in-law, Charles Proctor and Howard Cobey; special friends, Gerald Datcher, Alton Bowie, James (Mickey) Thomas, Joseph Woodland, Moe Brown and David Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
