IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Coleman
Savoy, Jr.
June 24, 1945 – May 24, 2021
SAVOY, ROBERT COLEMAN JR. (AGE 75) OF UPPER MARLBORO, MD
Robert Coleman Savoy, Jr. passed away on May 24, 2021, after a brief hospitalization and hospice care stay. Robert was born in Indian Head, Maryland as the oldest child of Robert Savoy, Sr. and Cordelia Savoy.
Three other brothers were subsequently born into the family; George, David and Roy . Robert went to the local schools in Indian Head. He fondly remembered other family members; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends with whom he grew up. He often said, "you can't make it in this world by yourself." He cherished his long-lasting relationships!
Bob's religion was the root of his life, and he demonstrated these experiences daily. He attended Metropolitan UME Church as a child and fondly visited the service there even after moving from the area. This church experience helped him to establish a religious foundation which he maintained throughout his life. Every night he got on his knees to pray for this church and for it setting him on his religious journey. Prayer for Bob was a daily occurrence, and he did not need a special occasion to pray. He prayed for others as well as his family. This ritual of daily prayer was continued until his death, with other family members praying for and with him when he had difficulty speaking.
Education was another early part of his foundation. He attended schools in Pomonkey, Maryland and was proud to speak of the "old school education" that he had received. He was eager to talk about the difference between "old schools and new schools". He stressed to young children the importance of an education in order to buy and get the things you want instead of someone just giving you something.
His formal higher education started at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore or (UMES). He graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Industrial Arts. Later, he pursued a Master's in Education (MS) from George Washington University in the field of Vocational Special Education. His pursuit in education provided him the opportunity to teach Industrial Arts for many years at Andrew Jackson Middle School. In later years, he taught in the same field at Frederick Douglas High School.
Bob's work ethic was exceptional in all areas! He had several hobbies which he enjoyed. He sponsored several activities for which he will be fondly remembered. He also ran football pools, card games, bowling leagues, and basketball tournaments for children. Bob loved events which focused upon developing strategies for winning. He was well known in the neighborhoods where he lived for communicating with the local people who were less fortunate. For many years he voluntarily completed work for senior citizens and people who could not afford his services. He was fond of saying, "I help those who can't help themselves."
Bob will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. He sought to bring joy and compassion to all his relationships. His exceptional construction work is well known in many homes and businesses. His attention to detail and quality were exemplified throughout his work ethic. One neighbor said of him recently, "I see Bob everywhere in my home." He also insisted that others maintain the same standards of excellence.
He is survived by his wife, Bettye, and six children: Robert, Rodney, Rosalyn Rashad, Keisha, Tondalaya and nine grandchildren.
Bobby leaves a host of friends, relatives, brothers, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family of Robert "Bob" Savoy would like to thank his dedicated caregivers, Eunice and Patience, his physician, Dr. Victor Herry, the nurses and personnel at Capitol Caring Hospice and all others who cared for him during his transition.
We can only remember our times and relationship with Bob. What influence did he leave upon our lives? What can we share with others from his legacy?
He was a gentle soul who lived to share a part of himself with everyone he met.
May he rest in peace!!!
