Robert (Bob) Maurice Montgomery , son of Maybelle Vernice (Colbert) Montgomery and Ernest Lawrence Montgomery, was born September 28, 1938 in Washington, DC. Bob was the 5th of 7 children. He transitioned from this life on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
Bob attended public schools in Prince George's County and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School in 1956. He loved music and played the saxophone (alto and tenor), clarinet and piano. After High School, Bob served in the United States Navy during which time he performed as a member of the U.S. Navy Band. Bob performed with numerous bands as a member of the Navy Musicians Association. He formed the Bob Montgomery Ensemble that performed at various social events. Bob was well-liked and respected by the musicians he played with over the years.
Bob later attended Howard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in June 3, 1966. While at Howard University, Bob was initiated as a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity (Zeta lota Chapter) in 1963. The Zeta lota Chapter was the first Historically Black College University chapter of the predominately white fraternity and the premier professional fraternity in Music at Howard University. Bob received his Master's Degree in Music Education from Howard University on June 7, 1968.
Bob began his career as a Music Teacher in the Charles County Public School System and taught in the Prince George's County Public School System until his retirement.
Bob enjoyed spectator sports and was an avid Washington Redskins fan. He was lucky enough to be a season ticketholder and attended home games at both RFK Stadium and Fedex Field. He even attended the Redskins' Superbowl appearances.
Bob attended Grace United Methodist Church at an early age as a child with his parents and his siblings. His church participation included membership in the United Methodist Youth Fellowship, the Veterans Group, the Goldsetters Mens Group, the Tribe of Naphtali, and served as Choir Director for many, many years.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, Jason Maurice Montgomery and three brothers, Quentin, Alton and Kendall Montgomery. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kahlettia Miller-Robinson (Reggie) and Terri Simmons-Thompson; one brother and best friend, Weldon Montgomery and two sisters, Eunice Hooper and Delores Riley; six grandchildren: Kaleisha Wright, Jonas Miller, Darriel Montgomery, Jerome, Dante and Kiara Simmons; five great grandchildren: Mikayla Miller, Jaesyn Wright, Ethan, Sebastian and London Miller and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Viewing, 10:00 a.m. until time of Service, 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Grace United Methodist Church, 11700 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, Maryland 20744. Interment, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623.
