IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard O'Brien
Stevenson
July 18, 1944 – May 14, 2017
Richard O'Brien Stevenson (also goes by Rick or Steve) was born in Norfolk, VA on July 18, 1944, to the late Richard O'Brien Stevenson, Sr. and Goldie Mary Richter. He attended Liberty Park Elementary School, Ruffner Jr. High School and Norfolk Catholic High School; now Bishop Sullivan High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in Psychology from Howard University in 1967. During his years at Howard he became an officer in the ROTC United States Air Force. The next year he began pursuing his Master of Science degree, but with the onset of the Vietnam War, he felt that it was his duty to serve his country instead. He enlisted in the United States Army and excelled in every endeavor. He received numerous awards and accolades. After his Honorable Discharge in 1972, he moved to Detroit, Michigan where he worked at the steel mill and also managed a McDonald's restaurant.
He moved back to Norfolk, VA in 1978, where he met and married Jacqueline Cunningham and assumed the role of father to her 9 year-old daughter, Leslie McKay. After two short years of marriage and birth of a son, Gerard Stevenson in 1980 and a daughter, Shyrynne Stevenson in 1982, he suddenly lost his wife, Jacqueline. Richard was devastated.
He struggled to bring balance back into his life. Like his father, he believed in family more than anything else and wanted to restore balance, love and security for his children. Being a man of tremendous faith and trust in God, he prayed for direction and guidance. His prayers were answered when he married Frances Lloyd in 1983. Frances assumed the role of mother to his three children Leslie, Gerard and Shyrynne. Richard and Frances had a son, Christopher Lloyd Stevenson, in 1984. They both shared the same values and morals of the importance of family and raising their children to be good people in the world. After a few short years the family moved to Temple Hills MD. He began working in Washington DC at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Steadfast to provide for his family, he worked until he couldn't work anymore; 26 years of nightshift as an electro-machinist.
Rick was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church, singing every Sunday with the gospel choir and also served with the Knights of St. John's Auxiliary. He enjoyed eclectic music, being near the ocean, airplanes and flying, the occasional Nestle Crunch Bar and popcorn with lots of butter and more than anything, he loved his family.
Richard is predeceased by his parents, Richard O. Stevenson, Sr. and Goldie R Stevenson; two brothers, Ronald Gerard Stevenson and David Richter Stevenson.
He leaves to remember with love his wife, Frances Lloyd Stevenson of Temple Hills MD; two daughters, Leslie McKay of Newport News, VA and Shyrynne Stevenson of Temple Hills, MD; two sons, Gerard Stevenson of Temple Hills, MD and Christopher Stevenson of Temple Hills, MD; one sister, Iris Nimmo of Virginia Beach, VA; three sisters-in-law, Edith P. Stevenson of Portsmouth, VA, Corinne E. Stevenson of Silver Spring, MD and Vera Lloyd of Riverdale, MD; one brother-in-law, Reginald Lloyd of Riverdale, MD; one mother-in-law, Olga Cunningham of Manhattan, NY; two grandchildren, Brion McKay of Portsmouth, VA and Alexis McKay of Richmond, VA; one great grandchild, I'yana Branch of Suffolk, VA; five nieces, one nephew, two great nieces, two great nephews and a host of family and friends.
