Renetta (Swann) Penny, 84 of Indian Head, Maryland.
Renetta Swann Penny was born October 6, 1938, in Nanjemoy, Maryland to her parents, Norman, Sr., and Lillian Swann.
Renetta received her education in Charles County Schools, graduating from Pomonkey High School.
Renetta accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized at Mt. Hope Baptist Church by the late Rev. Caesar R. Alexander. Renetta was a faithful servant of the Helping Hand Ministry and the Kitchen Committee.
Renetta was united in marriage to Joseph O. Penny, Sr., on October 1, 1955.
She began her career in February 1966 at what was then known as the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland. After a brief break in service, she was employed at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Arlington, Virginia. Renetta retired from the Federal Government as a Propellant Explosive Worker with the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland in 1993 after 26 years of dedicated service.
Renetta's grandchildren were her heartbeats of whom she was most proud of. Her favorite holiday was Christmastime. She always put up her decorations for the season every year. She had a passion like no other for the Burgundy and Gold Team. Win or lose, she loved "The Commanders." Renetta bowled 25 years with the United States Bowling Congress and 20 years with the Women's International Bowling Congress. In her later years, she volunteered and performed charity work. Oh, let's not forget how she loved the game of BINGO! She also loved to play cards, travel and collect Elephants (trunk up). Renetta's words of wisdom to others was "Always Be Nice".
On Saturday, June 3, 2023, she transitioned to eternal life. She was preceded in death by four children, Joseph, Jr., Royce and Phillip Penny and Janice M. Harris; as well as a granddaughter, Andrea' Penny; her parents, Norman, Sr., and Lillian Swann; six brothers, Harold, Robert Lee, George, Clifton "Shad", Roy, Lawrence "Lewis" and Albert "Scottie" Swann, Sr.; three sisters, Evelyn, Genevieve and Merline Swann; mother and father-in-law, John H. Sr., and Violet Penny.
Renetta will long be remembered as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, friend and sister and for her angelic positive spirit, her humbleness, wit and giving heart.
Renetta leaves to cherish fond memories, her husband, Oliver, two daughters, Theresa Penny and Jacqueline V. Penny-Smith; son-in-law, Ronnie Smith; daughter-in-law, Sandra Lancelin; nine grandchildren, Johnathan, Jamila, Vincent, Lance, Jokisha, Derek, Tammy, Devonna, and Lamar; 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Audery Jackson, Norman, Jr., Mary E. Britt; sisters-in-law, Donza Milstead, Doris "Sugar" and Irene Swann, Doris "DD" Dent and Estelle Penny; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing, 9:00 a.m., Monday, June 12, 2023 until the Life Celebration, 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640. Interment, Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Nanjemoy, Maryland.
