Obituary

Thompson, Rachel Augustine (Age 78) of Washington, D.C.

Rachel A. Thompson was born, June 20,1942 to Elvia T. and the late Richard E. Thompson, in Washington, D.C.  Rachel attended Pomonkey elementary and Pomonkey junior high schools. She graduated from Roosevelt High school in Washington, D.C.

Rachel was a wonderful Catholic woman, who touched many lives. She was a social butterfly; always embracing opportunities to stop and chat with strangers in hopes of gaining a new friend. Rachel would always show her kind side; however, she would always leave one knowing that a D.C. side existed as well.  She would let you know, jokingly, "Don't mess with my children or my grandchildren," especially her Lil' Tink.  Rachel was always the first to arrive at Washington Hospital Center if she knew a friend or family member of her friends, were there ill. Oftentimes, arriving before that person's family, just to make sure that the ill member would not be alone.

Rachel was a woman of many great Godly qualities who was quick to offer her assistance, regardless of what the need may be. She would not hesitate to lend a hand, a kind word, or, a dollar if needed. In addition to these qualities, Rachel was a woman of many skills. One rainy day, her daughter Donna arrived at a wedding she was coordinating, only to be greeted by a very familiar looking parking lot attendant, Mom Rachel, standing there with an umbrella. You could only laugh, yet at the same time cry, realizing that the act was an expression of  true motherly love.

Rachel loved her family, food and oldies but goodies, but mostly, she loved a family gathering with Momma (Ms. Elvia Thompson) taking the lead by telling a joke, singing a song or two and making sure everybody present was enjoying themselves.

Rachel leaves behind a multitude of friends, too many to mention. She was preceded in death by her brother Richard "Tony" Thompson, whom she loved dearly.

Rachel suddenly transitioned on September 30, 2020 in her home.

Rachel's family members left to celebrate her life, include daughters, Phyllis Byars (Robert Byars) and Donna Selby (David P Selby Sr.); grandchildren, Maria (Antuan), Danielle, Brittainy, Brandice, David Jr., Anthony and Robert II; great grandchildren; mother, Eliva T.
