Phillip Jerome Fitzgerald (Age 26) of District Heights, Maryland.
Suddenly on Friday, October 9, 2015 in Menlo Park, California, Phillip Jerome Fitzgerald transitioned to eternal life.
Phillip was born, October 3, 1989 in Washington, D.C. to Dorothy A. Lyles and Roger Lee Fitzgerald.
Phillip Fitzgerald was a friend and scholar to countless people. He was an amazing human being. Loved by all, Phil's energy and warmth graced everyone he encountered. Phil's infectious spirit and ability to connect with everyone was one of a kind, and he made an impact on communities far and wide.
His passion for science allowed him to touch many lives. Phillip was valedictorian of the Class of 2007 at Suitland High School in Prince George's County.
At the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), Phillip completed a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and graduated salutatorian of the 2011 graduating class. He flourished at UMBC from the day he was accepted into the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. The Meyerhoff program was founded to increase diversity among young leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Phillip said the program has had a big influence on him. Likewise, as a UMBC tutor and inspiring mentor to his peers and younger students, Phillip had a huge and lasting impact on the Meyerhoff program and the greater UMBC communities.
He matriculated to the MD/PhD program at Johns Hopkins University and later decided to switch fields. Earlier this year, he moved to California to under Stanford University's PhD program for Microbiology & Immunology.
Phillip leaves to cherish precious memories, his parents, Roger and Dorothy; sister, Andrea; grandparents, Leroy Lyles and Louise Fitzgerald; aunts and uncles and a host of cousins, relatives and special friends from Suitland High School, UMBC, Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University. He is preceded in death by his late grandparents, Charlie Fitzgerald and Lucille Lyles.
His viewing will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10am until time of Service, 11am in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Road Waldorf, MD 20601.
