Profile of Life
On Friday, November 2, 2018 at Collington Assisted Living, Mitchellville, Maryland, Ophelia Myers peacefully transitioned to eternal rest. She was born on February 2, 1916 to the late Reverend Frederick Douglas and Sarah Matilda Neale Myers.
Ophelia was raised in the Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She later became a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she played the piano, served as a church clerk, and became a member of the Washington Area Women's Ministry.
Ophelia went to school in a one-room school house on the property of her father's church in Pisgah, Maryland. She attended Pomonkey High School for three years before her father was assigned to a church in Prince George's County. After graduating, she attended Bowie Normal School (Bowie State University) for two years receiving a teaching certificate in 1934. Later, she attended Howard University where she enrolled in music-writing classes.
She left the teaching profession and started working for the Federal Life Insurance Company. After World War II started, Ophelia began working for the Office of the Chief of Finance in the War Department as a keypunch operator. After working there for several years, she decided to join the U.S. Army Women's Army Corps (WAC) in 1943. She was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1944.
Ophelia loved music and learned to play the piano by memory. She also loved to travel, visiting Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo, Canada, Liberia, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Dukar. Later, Ophelia established her own sewing/knitting business called "Ophelia's Creations".
Ophelia was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Dorcas, Frederick Douglas, Jr., French, Ralph, Richard, Nancy and Lillian Richardson. She is survived by brothers, Oliver (Alice) and Girard (Edith) Myers; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
