In loving memory of Nona Estelle (Chambers) Matthews
Sunrise: January 10, 1941 - Sunset: November 14, 2020
Nona Estelle Matthews, 79, affectionately called "Nona," was born, January 10, 1941, in Washington, DC to Rosco Chambers and Dorothy Mary Frances Thompson. She was born the fourth of six children.
Nona was educated in the District of Columbia public school system, graduating from Cardozo Senior High School. After graduation, Nona was employed by Weaver Brothers and Associates.
Nona married Larry Raymond Matthews, a graduate of Chamberlain Vocational High School, Washington, DC, an extremely talented DJ (DJ Lefty) and powerful baseball player.
Nona loved oldies but goodies, especially, "Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes. She also loved cooking and we sure loved to eat her food. I can just taste "Nona's Triple Delight" right now. Nona was always requesting her two oldest sons to sing the Temptations songs, as well as Eddie and Gerald Levert's, "Wind Beneath My Wings." She absolutely enjoyed singing, hand dancing and going to the casino to play the penny machine. Nona was always doing crossword puzzles (keeping the mind sharp) and she loved the freedom of driving because she got her license at a more mature age than most. Her dog Lefty became her beloved and constant companion, his warmth and commitment was unwavering. Her husband, Larry's, humor was such an inspiration in getting her through many tough times. Let's not forget, she was a die-hard Redskins fan, a devoted grandmother and was very proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Nona departed this life on Saturday, November 14, 2020. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Mary Frances Thompson and father, Rosco Chambers.
She leaves to mourn her memory, her husband, Larry R. Matthews; three sons, Robert Harris, Jr. (Lisa), Ronald Harris, Sr. (Joyce) and Ronald Matthews, Jr.; three daughters, Tiawana Miller, Dorothy Hunt (Cleophus) and Tonya Walton ( Carroll); four brothers, Donald Chambers (Audrey), Gregory White (Nadine), Michael Chambers (Edmonia) and Monte Chambers; one sister, Cynthia Tanner; grandchildren, John Steele (NaTasha), Raymond Miller, Delena Morton (Patricia), NaTasha Campbell (Rico), Chemiel Pierce, Ronald Harris, Jr., Malik Vaughn, Nina Walton, Robert Harris, III and a host of nieces and nephews. We can't forget the four Amigos, best friends for LIFE, Sylvia Walker-Newton, Patricia Patterson, Beverly Lundy and Delois Witcher.
