Obituary

NETTIE MISSOURI JOHNSON (AGE 85) UPPER MARLBORO, MARYLAND

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, Nettie M. Johnson departed this life at Rise & Shine Assisted Living in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.  She was born December 31, 1934 in Charles County, Maryland to the late William Edward Johnson, Sr. and Annie Coates Johnson Gaynor.

At an early age she joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. George Carter.  Nettie was educated in the Charles County School system and graduated in 1954 from Pomonkey High School.  After graduating, Nettie relocated to Washington DC where she was a domestic worker. She had a passion for cooking and caring for others.

In 1971, she was hired by the Soldiers Home of Washington DC in the Dietary Department where she worked doing what she loved…cooking! Nettie had an "anointing" for food. She loved to cook and watch people enjoy her meals. As children, her family couldn't comprehend the deliciousness she could put on a plate, especially her yams! After 30 years of dedicated service, Nettie retired from the Soldiers Home in 2001. We are quite sure they have missed her meals.

Nettie was a social butterfly and enjoyed life. She loved hanging out with girls, shopping, playing Bingo and going on Casino trips. No grass had a chance to grow under her feet!

Nettie leaves to cherish her memories sister, Kathrine Showell; brother, Mark Dupree; a host of nieces and nephews, special friends, Goldie and Pauline Carter, Mary Jenifer, Rose Posey and Rose (Peaches) Thompson and a host of other relatives and friends, far too many to name.

We are truly left with blessed memories of times filled with love, laughter, good conversations, family gatherings and just sharing the beautiful essence of this life with her.

Her Viewing will be, 10:00 am, until time of Service, 11:00 am, in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.  Interment, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Nanjemoy, Maryland 20662.
