Obituary

Milton Lee Chappelle (Chappie, Dad Chappelle) transitioned home on June 16, 2024 (on Father's Day).  Milton was the second child born to Willie Lee Chappelle of Clinton, South Carolina and Mollie Gray Chappelle of Crew, Virginia.  He was educated by the District of Columbia public schools, graduating from Dubar High School and later in life attending the University of the District of Columbia.  Milton was the valedictorian of his high school graduation class and delivered the farewell speech at his commencement ceremony.  After graduating high school in 1958, he entered the military joining the U.S. Air Force on July 11, 1958.  He was trained and became a radar operator.  He received an honorable discharge from service on July 10, 1962.

Before his discharge from active duty, Milton had a weekend pass and decided to fly home with a friend to Detroit, Michigan to meet his friend's wife and family.  During his visit in Detroit he met his future wife Ann Mallette.  Following his discharge from the military the couple settled in Milton's home town of Washington, D.C. where he worked several jobs.  He was later employed by the Federal Government and later moved to Prince Georges County in Maryland raising their two daughters.

His career with the U.S. Postal Service began in 1964, he retired after 30 years of service in 1994, from the Special Delivery Section.  Milton joined the Free and Accepted Masons, certified as worthy brother – Doric Lodge, No. 19 at the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of D.C. – June 23, 1973.  On May 8, 1976, Milton was certified into the Holy Royal Arch Masons, Mount Vernon Chapter.  He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 275, Glenarden, Maryland.

He loved traveling, and spending time with family and friends.  He also loved trying different foods, but his favorite was seafood, especially Maryland's Blue Crabs.  He'd drive just about anywhere to be able to find a good deal on a bushel of crabs.  He also loved to talk and debate on any subject as long as there was someone who would debate with him.  He loved watching pro-football and basketball games. He was a movie buff and an enthusiast of sci-fi movies.  He also loved music and dancing, he especially enjoyed jazz music.  Milton also loved big cars (Galaxy 500, Lincoln Town Car, Ninety Eight).  He loved working on his cars, and anything he could take apart and put back together.  He just enjoyed tinkering with mechanical things.  He could fix almost anything.  Milton always had a sharp mind and it remained with him until his last breath at 84 years of age.

Milton was predeceased by his daughter Veronica Chappelle Washington, his parents, sisters Willie Mae Chappelle and Mary Alice Chappelle. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Mallette Chappelle, his daughter Angela Chappelle Brooks (Derek), his granddaughter, Amira Chappelle Brooks Rittelmeyer (William), his brother Jerome Chappelle, Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
