Mildred Louise Vanison,75, of Temple Hills, Maryland
Mildred Louise Vanison was born on April 8, 1948 in Nelson County Virginia. She was the 17th child born to the late Ernest and Christine Vanison. Ten brothers, six sisters and her beloved friend of 30 years, Dr. Thomas Gardner preceded her in death. On February 26, 2024, Mildred transition from her earthly body to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was a member of St. James Baptist Church in Virginia and was baptized at the age of 12.
Mildred was educated in the Nelson County school system. She was a well-rounded student excelling in her studies, as well as singing in the choir and playing basketball. She graduated from Nelson Memorial High School in 1966 and, shortly after, made her way to the DC area seeking employment opportunities. She ultimately became employed by the Department of Labor and worked as a Management Analyst at OSHA retiring after 30 years of dedicated service.
While employed, Mildred Louise sought and obtained her degree in Business Administration from the University of the District of Columbia. Mildred enjoyed many things which included gardening, especially growing her own spices, cooking using items from her garden, traveling, and visiting art museums, especially the African Museum of Art. She was a great supporter of education and contributed to the United Negro College Fund. Mildred also appreciated politics and listening to the many views shared on CNN news.
Having no children of her own, Mildred enjoyed helping her nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Left to cherish her memory is her brother Eddie Vanison from Nelson County, Virginia, two sisters, Gustava Perry and Geraldine Loving from Bronx, New York, a devoted sister and friend, Catherine M. Foster from Temple Hills, Maryland, a longtime friend and former co-worker, Corliss Alford, life long, high school friends, Joann Mitchell, Jackie Randolph, Charles Martin, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Her viewing will be held from 10:00 am until time of Service,11:00 am, Thursday, March 7, 2024 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Maryland, 20640.
