In Loving Memory of Michael Anthony Wood
Michael Anthony Wood, aged 55, of La Plata, Maryland, peacefully departed this life on October 25, 2024, to join his Lord and Savior. He was born on January 24, 1969, to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Smoot-Wood and Howard Eugene (Lorraine) Wood.
Michael received his education within the Charles County Public School System, attending F.B. Gwynn Educational Center and Springdale Center. He graduated from McDonough High School in June 1990 in Pomfret, Maryland. He actively participated in the Special Olympics, excelling in track and field, bowling, and basketball. Throughout his journey, he proudly earned numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals. His engagement with the Special Olympics not only enriched his own life but also profoundly touched those around him.
Throughout his career, Michael held various positions within his community through The Center for Life Enrichment, where he forged lasting relationships and made significant contributions to his community.
A true family man, Michael cherished the company of his loved ones. He took pleasure in watching wrestling and listening to Oldies music. As an ardent supporter of the Washington Commanders (formerly the Redskins), he was known for his enthusiastic cheers during their victories were well-known. Michael was also delighted in attending dances and celebrations, infusing each gathering with his infectious energy and joy. His passion for food was an additional highlight of these social events.
Those who knew Michael recognized his remarkable memory; he had an extraordinary ability to remember people and details, making each encounter feel unique. Once you entered his life, you were with him for life, as he valued every connection and held those memories close to his heart. He often spoke fondly of his siblings. Despite facing the challenges of his disability, he maintained a joyful spirit, embodying a truly special individual who embraced life to its fullest.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Annie Beatrice Thomas and Benjamin Thomas, as well as his adopted sister, Doris Wood.
He is lovingly remembered by his adopted siblings, Bernice Greenfield, Maria Wood, Sheila Evans, Robin Lee, Oswald Wood, and Joyce (Larry) Lawrence. Also mourned by his siblings Edward Smoot, Janice Wood-Proctor, John Wood, Barbara Jean Wood, Eunice Wood, Howard (Gina) Wood, and Jessica (Keith) Humphries, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Michael lived a rich and fulfilling life, surrounded by the unwavering love of family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Viewing, 9:00 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024, until Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 410 St Marys Avenue, La Plata, Maryland, 20646. Interment, Church Cemetery.
