IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Melvin Leroy
Myers
January 17, 1937 – November 23, 2022
Melvin Leroy Myers, 85, of Bryans Road, Maryland.
Melvin Leroy Myers, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend departed this wonderful life on November 23, 2022.
Melvin was born to the late French W. Myers, Sr. and Pearl Ford on January 17, 1937 in Washington D.C. He was raised in Bryans Road, Maryland by his father and step-mother, Eleanor, alongside his eldest brother, French Jr. and younger brother, Vaughn.
After graduating from Pomonkey High School, he followed in his Uncle Girard's footsteps and joined the military, where he later met his wife, Helen. They crossed paths while he was stationed at Patuxent River. During his career as a Navy sailor they traveled the world together and eventually decided to settle back in Bryans Road to start their family. In 1976, they had their daughter, Melvina. Melvin spent many years working for the U.S. Department of Energy as a transportation specialist (driver) and retired from his position there. Once retired he went back to work part-time as a driver for Country Florist. Melvin was very protective of his wife and daughter, and later his grands and great-grands as well. He may have been small in stature but he was a superhero to his family.
Melvin enjoyed bowling and rollercoasters in his younger years and never stopped enjoying building things. He was a handyman in his own right! He had every tool, gadget, and piece of equipment you could imagine, a manual and motorized version. He knew where everything was, how it was supposed to work and how to fix it.
Melvin didn't mind sharing his skillset with those coming after him. He had a lot of patience with children and enjoyed teaching them when they were willing to learn. When his grandchildren showed interest in cutting the grass, he took the time to teach each one of them how to do it like a pro. Working in his huge backyard was one of his favorite places to be. He also enjoyed many card games, but Pinochle was his favorite. He taught his family how to play Spades. He would play board games, dominos and cards with his grandkids. In his late years, he would lay on the floor with his great grandchildren to play, give piggyback rides and even let them rough him up a bit.
Melvin was a life-long member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church. During his walk with Christ he served as an usher, a driver for the church vehicles, a member of the Choraleers and he also helped manicure the church grounds. He would sometimes take his wife to her church and they'd be finish in time to attend the service at Metropolitan as well. Whatever he needed to do, he would do it.
One of his proudest moments was hearing that his grandson Kroy was going to attend the U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Melvin was such a selfless man who did it all, effortlessly.
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife Helen, daughter Melvina, brother Vaughn (Patricia), Uncle Girard (Edith), grandchildren Kavina (De'Antae), Kroy, Kalia, great-grandchildren Kai, Da'Mani and Kassadi, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family, friends, and card partners.
