Obituary

Dobson, Melvin Jerome (Age 80) of Charlotte Hall, Maryland

Melvin Jerome Dobson, 80, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, with family by his side at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. He was born on January 6, 1944, in Easton, Maryland to the late Lester and Doretha Dobson.

Melvin spoke of his early years as being a country boy growing up on a farm.  He was educated in the Caroline and Queen Anne County school systems. It was at Kennard High School where he met his lifelong friend, Louis Elliot, and graduated in 1962. He then spent the next four years traveling the world in the United States Navy.

In 1966 he moved to Wilmington, DE obtaining employment with General Motors, retiring after 30 years of service. While working at GM, he was truly an entrepreneur and businessman at heart.  Starting with the detailing of trucks, cars, and motor homes with Watkins Trucks. He then capitalized on the 70's $1.00 homes in Wilmington, DE acquiring properties to renovate and rent. In the 80's he purchased a corner store at 10th and Pine Street in Wilmington, DE. It was there under the guidance of his aunt, Betty Wyatt, that Dobson's Variety Store was born to culminate in the incorporation of all his business endeavors as Dobson Services Unlimited, LLC.

Melvin was an excellent brother, uncle, friend, and father. If he could assist, he would help all those in need.

His last years were spent at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD where he was highly regarded and loved by fellow veterans and staff.

Melvin was a good friend of the Lord, beginning at an early age while living with Charles and Lila Mae Watson in Centreville, MD. It was in their care that he gave his life to Christ upon joining Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Upon making his home in Delaware he joined Mt. Joy United Methodist Church. In his final days and hours, he spoke with the Lord frequently. The Lord sent his angels to usher Melvin peacefully to his next assignment.

Melvin leaves to mourn his children, Eric Kennedy Dobson (Melody), and Nina Michelle Dobson (Floyd) and former wife Sylvia K. Dobson. Siblings, Viola Grooms, Janie Ricketts (Richard), Florence Dobson-Gonzalez, Rodney (Bernice), Eugene (Linda), Bernadette and Darren (Jewetta) Dobson, Martina Bethea-Dobson, and brothers William (Mary), Cecil (Sheryl) and Edwin (Connie) Flamer. Preceded in death by brothers, Lester (Shirley) and Michael Dobson, Henry Wooten, Arthur (Sandra) Pitts Jr, and sisters Doreen King, Tina and Deborah Dobson and Sylvia Miller.
