Obituary

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Melvin Lemuel Carroll, Jr. departed this life and entered a life of eternal peace.

Melvin was born on November 23, 1950 in Charles County MD to the late Melvin Carroll, Sr (Mep) and Audrey Keys. He obtained his education in the Charles County Public schools and graduated from LaPlata High School in 1968.

At an early age, he was baptized at Mt. Hope Baptist Church and served on the Male choir. He began his US Government career in 1968 working at the US Naval Propellant Plant. Shortly after which he joined the US Army. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and returned to the Naval Ordnance Station (NOS) in Indian Head, MD where he retired in 1998 after 27 years of service.

In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by his brother Darrell "Wilson" Carroll, sister Marian "Weedy" Carroll, sister-in-law, Angie James and granddaughter, Me'liah Angel Carroll.

He leaves to cherish his memories, two children, Sabrina Carroll-Cuyler and Melvin Carroll III, seven grandchildren, Daizhah Cuyler, Breanna Carroll, DeAndre Cuyler, Diamond Cuyler, Destiny Cuyler, DeShawn Cuyler and DeMarri Cuyler, four brothers Gary Carroll, Casey Carroll, Jeffrey Carroll and Fabrian Carroll (Theresa), five sisters, Sharon Arrington (James), Carol Ann Bowman (James), Judy Bowens (DeWitt), Diane Carroll, and Cheryl Lee (Thomas), Goddaughter, LaShawn Bowman, special nieces, Lawan White and TeKeema Pointer and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Melvin was known as "Fly" by friends and family members but affectionately known by most as "Butch." He took great pride in his appearance and was known as a "sharp dresser." His presence was made known whenever he entered a room. Melvin was instrumental in helping many others get jobs while employed at NOS.

He was charming, smooth, witty and comical just to name a few of the qualities that defined him. He loved crossword puzzles, word finds, western movies, court shows and spending time with family and friends. The confidence he possessed gave him great influence over a wide range of his family and friends.

To know him was to love him and to have encountered his presence was a blessing!

His viewing will be held from 9am until service time 11am on Saturday, March 15th in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home,P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640.

Interment,1pm, Tuesday, March 18th, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
