Hawkins, Mayzell Elnora (Age 71) of Bryans Road, Maryland
Mayzell Elnora Short Hawkins, better known as "May", departed this life on Saturday, April 17, 2016 at Sage Point Nursing Home in La Plata, Maryland.
May was united in marriage to the late Joseph R. Hawkins, Jr. "Sonny". From this union were three children: William R. Short (Susan), Webster Lee (Debra), and Amanda Hawkins.
May was born on January 25, 1945 to the late James E. Short, Sr. and Verdella M. Short. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jeanette Jenkins. May was a dietician at La Plata Hospital, now University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, for over twenty years. She then moved on to work at Southern Maryland Hospital, now MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital, and retired with more than twenty years of service.
She was a very caring and loving person, always willing to help others. May loved cooking, watching television, sipping on coffee every day throughout the day, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memories her two sons, William R. Short (Susan), Webster Lee (Debra); one daughter, Amanda Hawkins; six grandchildren, Donny Short, Ebony Cooks (Eric), Tevin Lee, Teejay Short, Rytashia Warren, and Iris Lee; five great-grandchildren, Jaliah Warren, Natalia Lewis, Elijah Cooks, Eryn Cooks and Krysten Short; three sisters, Dorothy Cooper, Adell Pope (John), Diane Short (Cecil), four brothers, James Short, Jr., Thomas Short, Jr. (Betty), Harold Short (Hazel), and Spencer Short; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Makle-Ivey, and Phyllis Cole; two brothers-in-law, William Hawkins and Bennie Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Her viewing will be held from 9am until time of service 11am on Saturday, April 30th in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment 9:30am, Monday, May 2, 2016 Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
