Obituary
Mary Katherine Waugh
"Our Heart, Our Superhero"
On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, Mary Katherine Waugh, affectionately known as Mom, Nanny, Grandma, Kate, Aunt Mary, Mary Kay, Cow-Brown and Wahoo, was called home by her Lord and Savior. Mary Kay was named after her Godmother, Catherine Ford.
A lifelong member of the Shiloh community, Mary Kay was raised by parents John Randolph and Ellen Brown. On March 17, 1963, she married Sidney John Francis Waugh, Sr. of Newburg, MD, and was blessed with four children: Yvette, Trantina, Sidney Jr, Marlo and one by adoption from the heart, Corey Washington. Mary Kay
loved her kids, and stressed the importance of having high moral character and a great education. She raised her kids to know God, be respectful, strong and independent – always saying that "if something happened to her or daddy, we would be able to take care of ourselves". She was proud of her kids and the men and women
they came to be. Although very strict, the kids called her the BEST Mom ever – knowing her to be caring, honest, and direct. She cherished and spoiled her grandkids and great-grands. They called her their "superhero"- always available for them, showing no fear, and doing and accomplishing whatever she wanted. She was not only our mother, but our friend because we could see-through her tough exterior, straight to her beaming heart! Mary Kay was also a surrogate mother to many other children; giving her heart, an ear or simply sharing her wisdom.
Mary Kay was raised in the Methodist faith and became a child of God at Shiloh Community United Methodist Church at an early age, and participated in all activities: church school, youth choir, plays, etc. As an adult, Mary Kay continued to serve God by supporting many church activities, worked on various
ministries and served as Shiloh's Financial Secretary until her passing. Mary Kay loved her church family, seriously took care of church funds, and was "a stickler for following the rules".
Mary Kay was educated in the Charles County public school system. She started working in 1967 at the Indian Head Naval Research Base, and later at the DOD Pentagon. She joined the Harry W.
Nice Memorial Bridge as a Toll Collector in 1972; promoted as its first African American supervisor in 1982. She served on several State committees and received numerous awards. After 33 years of service, Mary Kay retired from the Bridge in June 2005.
Mary Kay dedicated her life to serving others; she was a life-long supporter of the Children's Aid Society and helped other community organizations. She unselfishly dedicated her life to serving as a member of the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad for 25 years as an EMT and acquired the rank of Assistant EMS Chief. In 2010, she received Life Membership at the Newburg Rescue Squad and was the recipient of the 2006 and 2007 William F. Cooke Award Basic Life Support and Provider of the Year Award. In 2016, Mary Katherine
received the Dr. Henry Burke Memorial Service Award based upon the nomination by her company colleagues. In 1998, she joined the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Medic Unit and was again honored/recognized for her service. Mary Katherine is credited to saving two lives during her tenure with both the rescue squad
and medic unit. In 2004, Mary Kay and another volunteer were awarded the Yellow Heart for saving the life of a Charles County Police Officer. Mom enjoyed helping people, and teaching others to succeed!
In addition to her parents, Mary Kay was preceded in death by grand-parents, George and Alice Ford, and Mr. & Mrs. Parrin Brown, sister, Louise Brown, birth parents, George Spriggs and Ada Jones,
siblings, Alice Montgomery, Francis Spriggs, and Luvenia Montgomery, and grandson, Antoine Green.
