Obituary

Mary V. Washington "Sis" departed this life on Friday, August 15, 2014. She was born on September 22, 1935 to the late Raymond and Ann Washington.

Mary attended Prince George's County Schools and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School in 1953. In 1986 she earned an A.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies from Prince George's Community College.

Mary began her Federal Government career at St. Elizabeth's Hospital where she worked for 26 years. She retired from the National Labor Relations Board in 1997.

Mary had been a crafter for many years. Whenever you called her, she would be quilting, sewing, knitting, or crocheting. She designed and made beautiful quilts, wall hangings, and cloth dolls. She would often give her items as gifts. Mary was a member of the Daughters of Dorcas and Sons, Washington, DC and the Anacostia Arts Quilt Group. She made quilts for veterans and St. Ann's Infant and Maternity Home. In 2009 one of her quilts, Phoenix, was in the National Quilting Association show in Ohio and was subsequently selected as one of the quilts for the Judge's Prospective article, and appeared in the Winter issue of Quilting Quarterly magazine.

Mary was a member of Saint Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Fort Washington, Maryland, and until her health failed, was active in the Ladies of Charity.

Mary loved to play the slots, and on the way to the casino would talk about what strategy she had that day to win the big money. She also liked to play Scrabble and other games on the computer.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory her devoted companion, Calvin Marbury; beloved daughter, Carolyn Marbury Jacobs and son-in-law, Phillip Jacobs. She also leaves a sister, Vernice Warrick; brother, Francis Washington; and sister-in-law, Emma Louise Washington. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing, 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., Friday, August 22, 2014 at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 2315 Brinkley Road, Fort Washington, Maryland 20744. Interment, Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, Maryland 20735.
