Obituary

Mary Butler Thomas (Age 94) of Indian Head, Maryland.

On Monday, March 15, 2021 at her residence, Mary Thomas peacefully transitioned to eternal life.

Mary B. Thomas was born to the late James T. Butler and Alice Barbour on March 18 th , 1926 in Newburg, Maryland.

Mary graduated from Bel Alton High School in Charles County, Maryland. She attended Virginia State College, (now Virginia State University, Petersburg Virginia), where she received her B.S. degree. She did further studies at Catholic University, Howard University and Pennsylvania State University.

Mary taught in the Charles County Schools from 1946 to 1979 at which she retired. Then she substituted in Charles County Schools from 1979 to 1995. Teaching was a significant part of her life, which made her a beloved member of her community.

Mary held membership in many civic and professional organizations. Some of these affiliations include:

Bel Alton High School Alumni Association, Maryland. State Teachers Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Flowers of Purity Past Daughter Rulers Council, Randolph Furey Unit 170 of American Legion Auxiliary and Pomonkey High School Alumni Association.

She joined the Pride of Southern Maryland Temple # 651 in 1951. She held the offices of Vice Daughter Ruler, Assistant Daughter Ruler, Door Keeper, Recording Secretary and Escort.

Mary was a long-time member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, Maryland. Mary resided on Greenway Drive in Indian Head, Maryland.

Mary loved to talk to many people. She often said that when she went somewhere the other person talked so much, that is what took her so long to come back home. She loved to walk everyday on Ford's Drive and when she started, would count the rocks she put in her pocket.  When she finished one lap down, she took a rock out of her pocket and dropped it on the ground. This is how she knew how many laps she had walked.

In addition to her daily walks Mary enjoyed bowling, ceramics and of course, sewing. She was an accomplished seamstress for many brides and bridesmaids and would often fix anyone's garments at a moment's notice. She loved attending the Washington Redskin games and Georgetown Hoyas basketball team with her sport-loving husband as they both had season tickets for each team. She could tell you who played at every position for the Washington Nationals as her and her husband watched almost every game on TV. She also loved watching her favorite TV show Family Feud with Steve Harvey. Mary rarely missed an episode and loved to comment on his suits. Mary was a long-time member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) in which she was the weekly weight recorder. The member who gained the most pounds the week prior would come home with a small pig, let's just say she didn't get that pig much and when she did, she never wanted it again and could not wait to give it back the next week.  Mary had many friends and knew many people, as a result, she was a regular attendee at most of the home going services in Charles County.  Her collection of funeral Programs dates back many years and could be considered a source of history.

Mary was preceded in by her husband William "Bub" Thomas of 67 years, and 72 if you asked him as he included 'courting' before they were married, her parents James and Alice Butler, sisters, Catherine Hungerford, and Lucille Washington.

She leaves cherished loving memories; one son Barry W. Thomas (Nancy), two grandchildren Chavonne and Barry Thomas. And three great grandchildren; Aniya Gee, Jailah Thomas and Alex Gee.  Nieces Yvette Buck and Fan Taylor, and a nephew Myron "Mike" Hungerford and a host of beloved family, friends, and students.
