IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Frances
Cox
March 20, 1916 – March 29, 2017
Mary "Frances" Cox, of Indian Head, MD - formerly of Washington, DC entered eternal rest quietly at home on March 29, 2017, nine days after her l0lst birthday. She was born on March 20, 1916 in Scotland County, North Carolina to the late Noah Thomas and the late Anna Thomas Cox.
She dedicated her life to the Lord and became a member of The Garden of Prayer United Holy Church of America under the pastorate of Bishop Lillie B. Street. She served there for 60 plus years and was active on the Mother's Board and the Senior Usher Board for most of that time. Mother Cox resigned from the board to direct her focus to the youth of DC. She volunteered for years with the DC Foster Grandparent Program, enjoying every day she was blessed to spend with the little ones. Having a very prolific "green thumb", she worked with the Beautification Committee at Knotts Hill Senior Apartments in Anacostia. Not only did she plant flowers on the outside but she was well known for her plants in the windows throughout the Anacostia building.
This passion reached back to her career as a Window Display Designer to several downtown retail establishments. She reveled in decorating the building for holidays especially Christmas, putting decorations in the halls, windows, and common areas to bring joy to her fellow residents.
Mother Cox is survived by , two daughters, Helen McLean (James), of Indian Head and Thomasine Brown of Washington, DC. She was the grandmother of Donna McLean (Nathan), of Arlington VA; Jeffrey McLean (Linda), of Alexandria VA; Wilbert Brown, of Washington, DC. The late John Howard McLean and the late Thurman Craig Brown. Great-grandmother of Angela McLean, Cory and Erin Daise all of Alexandria, VA. Extended family Nathan Williams, Cornelius Drayton and Jaden Williams, all of Arlington, VA. God-children Diane Eastman, Cathy Montgomery and Jensen Shirley, niece like a daughter Jessie Black, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to list.
