Mary Elizabeth Cooke, 87 of Washington, D.C.

Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Cooke passed away peacefully and now is at home with the Father on March 31, 2018 in Ft. Washington, Maryland at the age of 87.  She is lovingly remembered and survived by her four children, Joseph H. Cooke, Jr., Estelle Cooke-Sampson, M.D., Vincent M. Cooke, and Lawrence E. Cooke; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, and four sisters.  She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph H. Cooke, her son, Gerald F. Cooke and granddaughter, Shayna M. Cooke.

Her name, Mary Elizabeth, was indeed befitting as she was, above all else, a very loving and nurturing mother.  While the loving mother of her own five children was her consistent top priority, she also made time to nurture many others on both the Jackson and Cooke sides of her extended family. She will be most lovingly remembered by Kay F. Jackson.

After raising her children and assisting to help raise many others, she earned her high school diploma and returned to the workforce as an analyst for the Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland.  Many years later she retired from NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. as the Mailroom Supervisor, where she earned many awards and accolades during her years there.

As a committed Catholic Christian she modeled her beliefs in word, deed and most especially, song.  Her favorite gospel singer was the first queen of gospel, Mahalia Jackson.
