IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Edna
Carroll
July 16, 1951 – June 8, 2023
Mary Edna Carroll, 71, of La Plata, Maryland
In loving memory of our mother, Mary Edna Carroll, who passed away peacefully on June 8, 2023, at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center.
Mary was born and raised in Charles County, Maryland to the late Charlie V. and Edna Jackson Carroll on July 16, 1951, and was the youngest of nine siblings. Mary was educated in the Charles County Public School System and later became employed by the Charles County Board of Education as a Building Service Worker, where she worked for over 29 years at Henry E. Lackey High School. During her employment there she had the pleasure of having both sons Damon and Winston "Mont," as well as several of her grandchildren, in attendance. They all excelled academically and graduated making her extremely proud.
After retiring in 2013, Mary enjoyed watching sports and cheering on her favorite NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys. She also enjoyed playing bingo and the lottery, spending time with friends and family while listening to Oldies but Goodies, especially Otis Redding and Roy C and had been known to cut a rug from time to time. She also found pleasure in talking on the phone throughout the day to check on friends and family. There were times when she seemed to be operating a hotline because she would hang up with Brenda, to chat with Poochie, then to chat with Winston, Jr. whom she lovingly referred to as Jay and from there Damon and Winston, Sr. whom she also lovingly referred to as Mont, then to complete her day by chatting it up with Terry and Albert as well as her siblings. Mary also enjoyed her weekly outings to Wise which was her favorite grocery store with her sons or grandson Deion to pick up "two things" or so she used to say but somehow those two things always seemed to turn into many things.
Our mother was a kind, caring and giving person who always put the needs of her family before her own. She was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with courage and dignity. Our mother was a source of inspiration to us all and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched. We are fortunate to be her sons and it's an honor to call her our "Queen". We feel like it would take a lifetime to write all the beautiful memories we shared with her, so we only shared a few.
Please take a moment to look at the person next to you. You may know the person. Or you might be meeting them for the first time but the one thing we all have in common is that we all cared about Mary. We are grateful to each of you for recognizing our mother as the wonderful woman she was. On behalf of my brother and myself we would like to thank each of you for taking the time to be here today to help us celebrate and honor our mother our "Queen".
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sisters Margrett Proctor and Romaine (Sally) Carroll; brothers, Wilbert, Charles (Sonny) and Jury Carroll.
Left to cherish and honor Mary's memories are her beloved sons, Damon Gray (Shelley Tapia) and Winston Datcher, Sr. (Gina), granddaughters, Brittany Greenhow, Ashley, Tiara and Brandi Gray and Katlin Tapia; grandsons, Winston, Jr., Brandon and Deion Datcher, and Dean Tapia, several great grandchildren, siblings, Lillian Wills, Irene Swann, Albert Carroll and a host of nieces, nephews and other close friends and family.
