Obituary

Marie Antoinette (Onley) Payne of Indian Head, Maryland
answered the call of her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at the Genesis Healthcare La Plata Center. She was the first of five children born on February 29, 1940 to the late Raymond, Sr. and Elsie Onley. She received her early education from the Charles County Public Schools, graduating from Pomonkey High School in 1958. She remained a loyal member of the
Pomonkey High School Alumni Association until her passing.

Marie accepted Christ at an early age, and was a dedicated member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church for most of her life. She was a faithful member of the Trustee Board, Addie E. Thomas
Missionary Society, Youth Ministry, Scholarship Committee and the
Culinary Arts Ministry.

Marie married Theodore Atlas Payne, Jr. on August 27, 1966, and from this marriage three children were born: Anthony "Tyrone", Milton "Tommy" and Twanna Payne.

Marie worked at the Southern Maryland Tri-County Head Start Program until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, she had many trials and illnesses, but together with her family and church, she kept the faith and worked through it all. Marie was a socialite in Charles County. She loved to keep in touch with friends and family, and often spent hours making personal phone calls to everyone on her handwritten list. She was a devoted mother who frequently volunteered to chauffer and chaperone her children and their friends. In support of her children, she took active roles in the Southern Maryland Majorette and Drum Corp, and the Lackey High School Boosters Association. She made sure she attended all the major events in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Marie leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted husband, Theodore, three children: Anthony Tyrone Payne (Meshaun), Milton Thomas Payne (Stephanie) and Twanna Payne Lesperance, five grandchildren: Sasha, Julia, Anthony, Jr. Payne, Micah and Silas Lesperance, four sisters: Elsie Lee (Onley) Curtis (Jerome, Sr.), Renee Matthews, Marsha "Kay" Matthews Dawes and Karen Matthews, goddaughter: Monica Curtis Gloster, one sister-in-law: Cora Payne Davis, and two brothers-in-law: Lafayette (Anne) and Weldon (Lenett) Payne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister: Ernestine (Fuzzy) Onley, two brothers: Raymond, Jr and Curtis Onley.

Marie will truly be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
