IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marie Annette
Coates
February 6, 1942 – May 1, 2022
On May 1, 2022, Marie Annette (Butler) Coates transitioned from labor to reward and entered into eternal rest at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland.
"Annette" as she was known to family and friends, was born to the late Irma J. Butler on February 6, 1942 and grew up in Marbury, Maryland. She graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1960 and on August 6th of that same year married the love of her life Russell G. Coates. From that 61 year union they were blessed with three children. Annette was a proud homemaker and mother until her children were in school. Then she worked in the accounting field, most notably at Children's Hospital, in Washington DC and at The Computer Science Corporation, in Sterling, Virginia retiring in 1997.
Russell and Annette lived in Glenarden, Maryland for over 30 years. There, they made many lifelong friends before returning to Rison, Maryland in 1995 and settling in the area where they both grew up and were married. Annette accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marbury. The same church that her great grandmother, Addie E. Thomas, started in 1907 and the church that her son, Reverend William A. Coates, now pastors. She was a faithful member of the Women of Purpose, the Flower Club Ministry and a staunch supporter of all youth and youth activities.
Annette loved to cook and never was one to use a recipe. She is certainly known for her bangin' spaghetti and turkey meatballs, her delicious strawberry shortcakes and amazing bread puddings. She loved cooking for her family, although she complained about the hassle. But every year she was back in the kitchen making delicious meals at every holiday for all who decided to show up. She collected salt and pepper shakers from all over the world; many family and friends would contribute to her collection, which she proudly displayed in her home. She was an avid reader, and was active in the Pomonkey High School Alumni Association, where she was able to reconnect and spend time with her high school classmates and her special "sister" friend Evelyn Gutrick. She was a mother to all and you would have to be careful to ask for her opinion. She gave it freely and most times without a filter. The Coates door was always open to family and friends in need throughout the years.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Russell of 61 years. Her brother Paul Jeffery Butler, her children Arthur Gregory Coates (Veronica), Rev. William Anthony Coates (Jamel), nephew/son Timothy Coates (Sabrina) and Maryland State Delegate Debra Marie Davis; one son in law Christopher Davis; six grandchildren Kendra Davis, Joshua Coates, Maya Davis, Jahrod Coates, Myles Coates, Jairus Coates (Tijhana), nine great grandchildren April, Sahara, Cam'ren, Lillyan, Jada, Kali, Bella, Winter, Leilah, her Aunt Elenora Bland, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends and many other children that simply called her Grandma. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother Charles Lewis Butler.
