Margaret L. Washington was born on June 3, 1920 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Herman
Edward Lee Sr. and the late Katie Lee. At an early age, she gave her life to Christ and joined the Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, where she was very active in the Sunday school, B.Y.P.U., and the Junior Missionary Society. She graduated from Armstrong High School of Richmond public schools on January 31, 1938. Mrs. Washington met her husband Rev. George L. Washington at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he also attended as a young college
student. On July 31, 1939, the young couple married and spent 40 years together until 1979 when God called Rev. Washington home. To this union was born George L. Washington Jr.,
Geraldine R. Washington, Timothy L. Washington, and Rosemary Washington Scott.
On July 1941, the handsome young minister and his beautiful wife were chosen to become the Pastor and First Lady of The Tabernacle Baptist Church in Washington, DC. They were both young and full of energy and had the will to put their hands to the plow and do the work of God. Rev. George L. Washington and his wife, the lovely Margaret L. Washington, faithfully served this church untiringly for 38 years. Under Rev. Washington's pastoral, many organizations of this church were established. Mrs. Washington organized and served as Directress of The Drama Guild. She also faithfully served as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher, Directress of the
Tabernacle Baptist Church Child Development Center, member of the G.L. Washington
Memorial Club, Missionary Society, Senior and Mass Choir, Women's ministry, and in any other capacity where she was needed. For over 55 years, Mrs. Washington served as a member of the Baptist Ministers Wives and Widows of DC and Vicinity, Inc. and on April 3, 2010 was recognized by them for her dedicated service. Often she used her marvelous gift of drama and dramatic readings. One of her favorite plays she directed was the "Slab Town Convention" and she was renowned for her reading of "The Creation." We can never forget the immeasurable contributions Mrs. Washington made in the church for The Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Washington was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and an excellent cook. Her specialty was homemade rolls, biscuits and corncakes! She loved making holiday dinners and spending time with her family. Mrs. Washington had both outward beauty and inward beauty and was very fashionable with a love for hats. When she was not serving the Lord in the capacity of the First Lady, Mrs. Washington also worked in daycare for many years reflecting her love for children. She was an active member of the YMCA group The Sassy's and volunteered as an election officer for Washington, DC. She always had a smile no matter the
trials of life. All of us who knew Mrs. Washington have had our lives enriched through her walk with Christ.
In addition to her parents and husband, also preceding her in glory were her children, George, Geraldine and Timothy Washington.
She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Washington Scott (Gregory King Scott, Sr.); brother, Herman Edward Lee Jr.; grandchildren, Camille Scott McLeod (Richard), Gregory King Scott, Jr. (Wakina), Gerald Kenneth Scott (Curtrice); great-grandchildren, Richard, Gerald Jr., Gregory III, and Gavin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her viewing will be held on Saturday, March 5th, 9:00am until services 11:00am at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 719 Division Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20019. Interment National Harmony Memorial Park, Hyattsville, MD.
