Obituary

PATTON, MARGARET C. "PEGGY" (AGE 70) OF OXON HILL, MD

Margaret Catherine Curtis was born November 26, 1941 at the beginning of World War II to the late Jerome and the late Rosie Adele Curtis in Baltimore, Maryland. She was affectionately known to family and friends as "Peggy."

Peggy was the youngest of five. When she was one year old, the Curtis family moved from St. Mary's County to a town in Charles County Maryland called Rison. Around Junior High School, the family moved to Indian Head, Maryland. She attended Pomonkey High School, the first colored school for blacks in Charles County (Class of 1959).

At a very young age she married John Allen Patton, Sr. and from this union three children were born, John Jr., Marvin, and Gwendolyn Patton in that order. The marriage didn't work out, but, as a single mother she continued to raise her three children. Peggy worked at various governmental agencies, but her long term jobs were with the US Postal Service and at the time of her departure she was still employed for the Prince Georges County Health Department as a professional driver. She was so proud of her CDL license that she often referred to herself as a "professional" driver. This should not come as a huge surprise since she learned how to drive, as a teenager, by driving farm tractors.

Baptized at St. James Episcopal Church, she gave her life to Christ over 10 years ago. Peggy was very knowledgeable, self reliant, had a keen mind and didn't have to study for tests, etc. She had all kinds of big ideas but didn't always follow through with them. She was a computer whiz/nerd in her most recent years. Her latest idea was to create her own driving fleet and name it "Midnight Madness." The purpose was to chauffer socialites and the likes to night life events. It didn't materialize however, but it was her dream. Peggy's spirituality, meditation and carefree persona carried her throughout her life.

On Wednesday, November 21, 2012, Peggy suddenly departed this life for one eternal.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Lorraine Gutrick.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, John Jr., Marvin and Gwendolyn; a host of grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Savoy, Jean Sultzer, and her one and only big brother, Jerome Curtis Jr., a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and her life-long friend Patricia Carroll.

Her viewing will be held on Friday, November 30th, 9:30am until time of Service 11:00am at the Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 3385 Metropolitan Church Road, Indian Head, MD. Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont, MD.

Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A.
