Obituary

SHACKLEFORD, MARCELL JEROME (AGE 41) OF BRYANS ROAD, MARYLAND

On Wednesday, January 10, 2024, Marcell Jerome Shackleford was called home to join his ancestors and walk around Heaven with his Heavenly Father.

Marcell was born on September 19, 1982, in Washington, D.C.  Anyone who knew Marcell also knew of the devotion and love his parents bestowed on him. Marcell graduated from Lackey High School in 1999. While attending Lackey, he took classes to be an electrician, to follow in his father's footsteps. After graduating from High School, Marcell chose to participate in Job Corps, where he studied Auto Mechanics. Marcell also accepted Christ and was baptized while in Job Corps. Marcell's passion was working with animals, and he later found his calling grooming dogs.

EVERYONE knew how much he loved his extended family and how much he loved partying with them. Marcell was always there whenever there was a family event, and the GoGo music was playing.

He also loved animals and airplanes.

One of his favorite pastimes was spending his days at the Air and Space Museum, and he NEVER missed the air show at Andrews Air Force Base. In the darkest hour of the night, He stopped his car on Billingsley Road (a winding two-lane road) to pick up an injured owl. When he flagged down a policeman to inquire about finding a sanctuary to take the wounded bird, the officer was shocked to see the owl clinging to the seat of Marcell's car. He said, "It was a miracle that the bird didn't claw his eyes out when he put him in the car."  Not to mention the many animals he attempted to bring home, one of which became our beloved pet (Sandy). One thing was certain, once Marcell called you "friend," you were his friend for life.

Marcell wore many hats during his adult life: he worked at the Washington Convention Center's Banquet Hall for a while. However, he showed his true talents when grooming dogs and later at various retail establishments in and around the Bryans Road area.

Marcell is preceded in death by his father, Charles Shackleford; his sister, Tandra Shackleford; his grandparents, Major Shackleford, Sr., Catherine Shackleford, Milton Hale, and Inez Myers Hale.

Marcell leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Deborah Shackleford; brothers, Henry (Hank) Washington, Jr., Stephen Washington; aunts, Betty Giddings and Dorothy Thomas; uncles, Major Shackleford, Jr. (Barbara) and Lamont Hale. Marcell will be missed by a host of relatives and close friends.

His viewing will be held 10am until time of service 11am on Monday, February 5, 2024 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.  Interment follows at Harmony Memorial Cemetery, Hyattsville, Maryland.
