Obituary

Nelson, Lynn Joan "Little Feet" (Age 54) of Alexandria, Virginia

Lynn Joan Nelson (Little Feet) was born on November 16, 1966, in Alexandria Virginia to the late William Noel Nelson, Sr. and the late, Lelia Ann Goins Nelson. She departed this life and gained her Angelic wings entering the gates of Heaven on October 30, 2021. She was the youngest of six but the strongest of us all.

Lynn found Christ at an early age and attended Beulah Baptist Church. Her mother encouraged her, as well as her siblings, to get to know Christ and establish and strengthen their relationship with the Lord. Her father instilled within her discipline and hard work. He taught her there were no short cuts in life. Lynn definitely got her tenacity from him.

Lynn was educated in the Alexandria City Public School System and graduated in June of 1985 from T.C. Williams High School. She furthered her education at Northern Virginia Community College and earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies. Lynn worked for the Federal Government as a Legal Document Review Clerk and retired after serving over twenty-five years.

Lynn loved serving her community. She was the Co-Founder of Black Roots of Alexandria with her dear friend, Roberta E. Elliot Speight. Their organization brought awareness and knowledge to the citizens of Alexandria and surrounding cities about the rich and important Black history as well as promoting and supporting Black owned businesses and entrepreneurship. Lynn was also a member of the Martin Luther King Jr. planning committee for many years.  It was her hope to instill a desire to serve by inspiring the youth with the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Perhaps one of Lynn's proudest moments was when the ball field on the corner of Braddock Road and Mt. Vernon Avenue was renamed The Lenwood "Lenny" Harris field. She was so happy and proud that she played a major part in that process. Lynn was as selfless as they come. She loved to see people excel and would do anything she could to help.

It is unquestionable that Lynn became the strong loving person that she was due to the extraordinary influence her mother, Lelia Nelson had on her life! This is where Lynn got her courage, confidence, and caring heart. Her mother was a driving force in keeping Lynn focused and constantly reminding her that her childhood illness was no reason to give up or give in. Her mother would never allow negative thoughts to enter Lynn's head and always instilled positive reinforcements that allowed Lynn to prosper.

Lynn was fortunate to have some awesome mentors in her life. Mrs. Rosa Byrd kept Lynn encouraged and motivated about her love and service to her community.  Ms. Joyce D. Rawlings, " Ma Rawlings" taught Lynn to walk in her purpose, to be heard and seen, and to speak up about the issues plaguing our city.

Lynn was small in stature but was a GIANT person with a caring and loving heart for all people. Even when sickness held her back from making any public appearances, she would always have a say in something and would be quick to let you know if things did not appear to be on the up and up. She was feisty and did not care if she stepped on any toes. She was a force to be reckoned with.

Lynn was in a loving and supportive relationship with her fiancé, Troy Wilson. She and Troy spent time on short vacations, dining out at various restaurants and shopping. His shared thoughts of Lynn are "she really changed who I am and made me a better person. She was the love of my life." Lynn just loved being outdoors she just wanted to live life to the fullest despite her illness.

She leaves to cherish her memory, siblings, William Noel Nelson Jr; Carrie A Johnson (George); Michael Anthony Nelson (Cheryl A Nelson) Cheryl Wynette Nelson; and Steven Linwood Nelson (Darnella), nieces, Leslie A David (Clint) Brittany Lynn "Leilani" Nelson; Kelsey Lynae Nelson (Nicholas); and Trinity Joy Nelson, nephew, Myles Anthony Nelson, fiancé, Troy Wilson, godson, Darnell Eric Roy, goddaughter, Dakota Kennedy Vashti Kindred and a host of loving uncles, cousins, and friends.
