Lois
Sinclair
August 9, 1939 – October 25, 2022
Lois Sinclair, 83, of Fort Washington, Maryland.
OBITUARY
Lois (Myers) Sinclair transitioned from this life on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Lois, (also affectionately known as Sister, Sis, Mom, Grandma) was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on August 9, 1939, to the late Ethelue (Zimmerman) and Sheldon Myers. In 1944, the family relocated from Orangeburg to Washington, DC.
Lois was educated in DC Public Schools. A young 16-year-old Lois would have a life changing moment on Maryland Avenue in the Capitol Hill section of Washington, DC and meet the love of her life Richard Lee Sinclair whom she referred to as Rick. After a brief courtship, on December 28, 1956, she and her would be lifelong partner Rick married for 66 beautiful years until her time of death. From this union they were blessed with six children, Kahlettia, Shelia, Breonna, Lois, Richard Lee (Rick), Jr., and Everett (Steve). Lois gave her life to Christ and was baptized as a member of Little David Baptist Church in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Lois worked at various popular sandwich counters in Washington, DC to include People's Drug Stores and Gaston's Sandwich Shop. At Gaston's, work was a family affair as she shared vocational duties with mother, Ethelue and four of her aunts. God's favor would come her way in 1969, while working in a sandwich shop on the corner of 10 th and K Streets, N.W., one of her customers, Roger Washburn, offered her a job at Washburn Realty (now known as Home Realty, Inc). As a result of this divine encounter, Lois enjoyed a career at Home Realty for 30 years and briefly worked for Shopper's Food Warehouse until her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 1999.
Lois loved to party and used it as an outlet from the rigors of life alongside her Social Club friends as a member of The Dynamic 7and then The Lucky 13, which were both member only groups consisting of some of her close friends. Through the years, the member-only Social Clubs held cabarets, holiday events, sponsored trips, and held family gatherings together. Lois loved music, especially the popular Soul Music genre "Oldies" and loved to dance. Even after her illness caused limited use of her legs, she could be seen smiling and dancing in her chair. Traveling was another favorite pastime; she enjoyed get-aways. Favorite places frequented included but were not limited to ports of call in the Caribbean Islands via her favorite carrier line, Princess Cruises.
Lois' family was her passion. She would tell anyone that her girls were her best friends. She loved preparing food for family gatherings, and there were many. Any excuse to have a gathering -- the many birthdays, graduations, weddings, picnics, family reunions, Disney World vacations, and weekends at Indian Acres for all six children, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Many of Lois and Rick's trips especially to Las Vegas and Atlantic City were accompanied by their children. Lois wanted her children exposed to the education and opportunities of the world. Lois was not only a mom to her birth children but understood the African proverb that "it takes a village to raise a child." The Sinclair's home on Coolidge Street in Capital Heights, Maryland offered others a place of refuge and another mother figure in Lois. She had a big heart and employed her love to take people into their home, especially children who were without. This would make her a role model and it extended to chaperoning duties at Largo High School for the class of 1973's senior class.
Lois never forgot her roots in Orangeburg, South Carolina, often visiting relatives for special occasions including, weddings, funerals and family reunions. She and Rick wanted their children to know where they were from by participating in the family committee when the family reunions were held in Washington, DC. Lois was a committed member to her local church and had her children involved spiritually. And they never departed from their mother, always showing up to run errands, the daughters often coming by to help with cooking and household chores, back and forth to doctor appointments and personal needs, shopping for their mom and bringing her the best goodies to make her smile and son taking over the yardwork and being their personal handyman around the home. Grandma Lois preserved her posterity and dotted upon her grandchildren who loved her compassionate care and cooking. Of all the meals the macaroni & tuna salad and Country-Time lemonade aka Power Punch were the grandchildren's all-time favorite.
Her grandchildren reflected on their favorite Grandma quotes -- "Hey Hon", "Stop running in and out!", "You smell like outdoors!", "Go sit down somewhere!", "I like a little coffee with my sugar" and "Give that baby some more!". Lois leaves a legacy of love of family.
She is preceded in death by her mother Ethelue Myers Thompson; her father Sheldon Myers; her stepfather Brodis Thompson, her son Richard Lee (Rick) Sinclair, Jr; her brother James Myers; and most recently her son-in-law Grant L. Hampton.
She leaves to cherish her memory, by her husband Richard Lee Sinclair, Sr.; children Kahlettia (Reginald) Robinson, Shelia Hampton, Breonna (Joseph) Pugh, Lois V. Sinclair, Everett S.
