Obituary

Lillie Mable Jones was born in Richmond, Virginia on July 9, 1930 to the late Eddie and Rebecca Young.  She departed this life peacefully to be with the Lord on June 9, 2020 at the Fort Washington Rehabilitation Center.

In 1970, Lillie started volunteering at H.D. Cooke Elementary School in the lunchroom.  She did such an excellent job volunteering that the principal offered her a full-time position.  She loved all children and became affectionately known as "Ms. Mable" to all the children in the neighborhood.  They always knew Ms. Mable had something to eat, and she would feed every child in the neighborhood.

Lillie worked for over 30 years at various schools throughout Washington, DC.  She received several Certificates of Appreciation from one of the schools "and the children whose lives will be happier and futures will be brighter" because of her generosity. She retired in 1991, but retirement didn't slow her down.  She volunteered as a Foster Grandparent for United Planning Organization (UPO) for eight years and was presented with a "Grandparent Award, from Malcom X Elementary School for "Loving Children First." She then retired to babysitting in her home.

Family meant everything to Lillie, especially the grandchildren, who brought her so much joy.  She loved to visit her grandchildren who never wanted her to go home. Even more than family Lillie loved the Lord. She gave her life to Christ at an early age.  She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church, then she later joined Rehoboth Baptist Church where she served on the Sr. Usher and Missionary boards, Fellowship Committee for several years. She also sang with the choir. She joined Messiah Baptist Church and served as a Trustee.  Later in life she joined Fort Foote Baptist Church where her son Joseph currently serves as the Children's Minister.

Mom's favorite saying was "EVERYDAY WITH GOD IS A GOOD DAY!  THANK HIM FOR HIS BLESSINGS'!!

Preceding her in death were her sisters, Daisy and Rosa and her brothers, Purcell, Matthew, Edward, Suri, Morris and Nelson, one son, Ronald, one grandchild and three great grandchildren.

She leaves to celebrate her life four daughters, Dorethea, Sheron, Patricia, Lillie (Robert) and one son, Joseph Brown (Penny).  Also 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

The family would like to give a very special thanks to Joseph and Penny from the bottom of our hearts for all the love, kindness, support and patience you gave Mom.  The two of you made her transition from her apartment to your loving home a smooth one.  Thank you for preparing her meals, taking her to doctor's appointments, making sure she was taking her medication and keeping her safe.  We appreciated everything the two of you have done.
